Present to the Public a Moving Il lustration of the Progress of the Fighting Forces of the World. Smokeless powder, magazine rifles and carbines, quick-firing breach-load ing cannon, long distance weapons, the recognized necessity of employ ing enormous bodies of mounted in fantry has so changed and enlarged the art of -war that its practice has now become homogenous. All the war like nations of the earth are adopting the same methods. Gay, bright and costly uniforms have been discarded for field service. Each soldier while governeu and ex ercised under discipline is being taught self-reliance while in action, for in all future battles victory will mainly depend upon the individual confidence and .initiative that spon taneously animates the units of the mass. Change is Emphasized. This remarkable change in military offensive and defensive tactics has been largely emphasized by the tours of the Wild West exhibition through the United States and the principal countries of Europe. Not until Col. Cody's half nude and painted Indians, his cowboys, vaqueros, gauchos and other wild riders performed their fierce and startling feats a la Ameri can in the presence of millions of spectators on both Bides of the At lantic ocean did military students who had lost faith in the value of horsemen In time of actual war begin to appreciate the necessity for a vast skirmish line of skilled cavalry. Ancients Depended on Footmen. It is true that the Romans, the Huns, the Goths, the English, Rus sians, Germans and Italians found employment for the horse in dragging chariots or carrying armed men. The ancient races depended on long col umns of countless thousands to over run conquered territory. The cavalry of Frederick the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte, of Welling ton, Bluoher and Adolphus were used at critical moments in charging artillery batteries or cutting through lines of infantry. The ride of the famous Six Hun dred at Balaklava, the onward rush of the Coldstreams and the Scots Greys at Waterloo under Sir Thomas Plcton, the brilliant advance of Sher idan's troopers at Winchester under Torbett, Wilson and Custer were only permissible in the presence of muzzle loading muskets. The Invention of breech-loading rifles and cannon, the adoption of smokeless powder, the long-range and magazine character of rifle, carbine and field piece gave rlsp to the belief that cavalry were no longer useful on the battlefield. A Change Was Necessary, But the "continuous war" on the American frontier with the Indian ne cessitated the army of tho United States to meet the changed conditions when the red men replaced the bow and arrow with the Romlngton, the 1 In-., Henry and the Winchester rlUo by learning In the strategic school of tho foe, the necessity of celerity of ac tion, certainty of aim, advantage of position, unobtainable without being "at home In the saddle." It is the lessons from this school Col. Cody's combination gives effect ively and as a teacher has been a factor as well as a historic educator and healthy amusement. The Wild West will exhibit here on August 20. UNAVOIDABLE RUNAWAY. Burns Stage Passengers Had an Ex citable Time Saturday. Last Saturday the Burns stage ar rived in this city several hours late, says tho Grant county News, pub lished at Canyon City. Tho delay was caused by a runaway, which took place at Soda, about six miles the other side of Seneci. Soda Is known as the Prank Mc Bean stage station and at present Is used as a watering place. Tom Mor rison, the driver, had got down from tho seat, handing tho reins to one of the passengers a drummer. An other passenger, Mrs. Jacob Sliffe, of Fox valley, was also on the stage. In somo way the team becamo fright ened and started to run. T'ip man with the lines was unable to hold them, but managed to turn them Into a tree. The shock threw tho passengers out, the woman falling under tho horses, who were kicking furiously. In some miraculous way the woman was rescued from her perilous posi tion without serious injury, receiving only a few slight bruises on her shoulder and arm. A new rig was procured at Southworth's station an J 1 lie passengers brought to town, ar riving hero about 9 o'clock.
