THE HAHVESTHANDS ALL CLASSES AND CONDI TIONS OF MEN IN FIELDS. Men Who Harvest the Golden Grain Come From Highest as Well as Lowest States of Society Wages Are Good. Amontr the men who come Into this section of the country to work in the harvest nelds a surprising amount of variety may be noticed. To the casual observer who sees these men grouped about a street cor ner awaiting the coming of some farmer in search of "hands," or busi ly at work about a huge steam com bine, or thresher or separator, be grimed with dirt and sweat, and all toiling in one common cause, there is wnnt to he n. ceneral similarity bro ken only by minor variations of physi cal features. The man who lives and labors among them, joins them in their sports after working hours and rough sports they are too and shares their slumbers in barn loft or hay stack, soon discovers that among the harvesters there are as sharply drawn and well defined lines of so ciety as among the upper-crust and leaders of swelldom. All Classes and Conditions. These men are 'of all conditions and classes, of all nationalities, and of all degrees of intelligence. In one harvesting crew may be found the most ignorant of Finnish or Hun garian immigrants and the remnants' of once popular and successful col-; lege students, or even ex-business, men who have been unable to keep up with the tide of modern progress. Some are there from lack of early training to perform other than man ual labor, some for the novelty of the thine, some from sheer necessity, some because King Alcohol has them in his grasp so firmly that they can not fill the positions of trust for which they were trained and educated, can in fact hold no position permanently and have thus been driven to the lower levels' of the laboring world to mainraln themselves. Skilled Mechanics There. nMierfi niraln lust as dirty and sweat begrimed as the lowest of their fel lows, are skilled mechanics, earning sums of money which would' look fab jilnns to manv a white shirted and silken necktied clerk or bookkeeper who would turn aside to avoid urusn inir nernifinf thfl toll besmeared wage earner,, were they to meet him on the streets. The wages paid harvest hands var inn in iHfffirnt localities and also ac cording to the character of the work being performed. In Umatiua couniy hardly, a roan In the harvest field earns less than $2 per day and ex penses, and the wages run from that figure for the commonest labor, to per day for the men who tena mo separators. Rrieflv summed un the wages or harvest fiande may be said to aver age nearly $3 per day.. Wage6 are Good. The common laborer, draws $2 dallv. the) team driver from $2.50 to $3.50 according io tho number of horses handled and the character of his work, the etraw-buck, whore one is used.' earns $4" and $4.50 per day and earns every cent of It the sa'ck sewer is paid frpm $3 to $4.50 or even JR dallv according to his experience and skill, while the top wages go to tho men who handle the engines on BI3KF TRl'ST. t'nuhlt, too, i upirjti- n it's haul to ninko both ends the steam combines and those who tend the separators, their daily stipends ranging from $5 to $8. Other employes about the fields get $3 to $3.50 per day. A good harvest cook gets easily $60 to $75 per month, with a strong demand throughout the season. Demand For Men is Good. Just at present the demand for men in all grades of the work Is extremely good and such signB as "Men wanted for Harvest," "Wanted water tender for separator engine" "Good cook for harvest fields wanted," may bo seen at nearly every street corner, while some farmers are so anxious to se cure men that they drive their hay racks through the streetB calling for anyone desiring work to climb on tho wagon and go with them. A Warm Time on Pay Day. These men draw their money as each field is harvested and tho great majority of them come to town to spend it just as soon as they draw. For a few days they paint the town a brilliant vermillion, then back to the harvest fields for another bout with the golden grain. Pythlans Coming West.
