BACK FROM CALIFORNIA.
Senator W. M. Pierce Returned From
a Southern Trip.
Senator W. M. Pierce returned
Wednesday evening from- California.
While away Mr. Pierce visited San
Francisco and the Victoria Island, on
the San Joaquin River, owned b
Henry Pierce. Mr. Pierce says this
Island is one of the finest places to
raise all kinds of vegetables on earth,
and it is a veritable Garden of Eden.
The Island contains 7000 acres and
4500 acres are now under cultivation.
On this Mr. Pierce has 3000 acres in
white beans, which are worth $70 an
acre; 300 acres of onions, valued at
$100 an acre; 1000 acres in potatoes,
calculated to make 200 sacks to the
acre. A barley crop of 400 acres has
been harvested and made 50 bushels
to the acre.
Mr. Pierce thinks this is one of the.
finest places on earth and will prove
better"orthan a gold mine for his
brother.
A SHOOTING AFFRAY.
But it Was Only the Dog Catcher
Killing Dogs.
Quite a ruffle of excitement was
caused along Webb street, In the vi
cinity of Cottonwood, Wednesday
evening by several pistol shots
in quick succession.
Upon Investigation the shooting
was found to be coming from the dog
pound. Four unlucky canines baa
fallen into the hands of the dog
catcher and last night was set as the
end of time for them. Accordingly,
just after dark, the dog catcher went
to the pound and killed the canines
with a revolver.
