THE STOCK
MORE TROUBLE REPORTED
ON GRANT COUNTY RANGES.
Said That Another Big Band of Sheep
Has Been Fired Into and Several
Were Killed Particulars Are
Scarce.
The Spokesman-Review of Monday,
contains the news of another bloody
episode which has taken place in
Grant county's spectacular stock war.
The scene of the last killing was on
Murderer's Creek, a remote and In
accessible district of the interior of
the John Day country. While partic
ulars are meagre, the story Is that
several head of sheep were killed by
infuriated cattle men and resldenters.
of that region near where 'the slaugh
ter occurred. It was, as usual, an
outside sheep man who suffered this
time. The Bheep belonged to J. C.
Moore, of Mount Vernon. Reports
vary as to the number slaughtered,
one report being that several hundred
were killed while others say only a
few dozen died at the hands of the
stock men who believe this is the
only way of dealing with outside In
vasion. News Is Hard to Get.
Where the shooting occurred is
many miles from any telephone or
outside communication, and Is many
miles from any settlements and it
will be several days, and perhaps
weeks, Taefore the particulars will be
obtainable.
Another story goes that while1,
herders of William Mitchell were
ranging a band in a district Just in
vaded, a short distance over tLe Uma
tilla county line on Camp Creek, hid
den men, supposed to have been set
tlers or cattle men, fired several shots
at the herders. lone of the Bhots
took effect, however, and it is thought
the firing was done just to intimi-j
date the men In charge of the sheep.
The men struck camp with their band
and no violence was attempted other ,
than the first shooting. ;
The above are the only outbreaks
in the Grant county ranges since the
massacre of Baker's and Mascall's
flocks of sheep last month. Affairs
are outwardly quiet again, but it Is
said that a bitter undercurrent is
running and other serious trouble
may break out at "any time.
Question Is Unique.
The range question of the interior
is one cf the most unique of the
country. It is said that the resident
cattle and sheep men have about de
cided to stop their fighting with each
other and lay for the outsider. This
will be a case of the Hon and lamb
lying down together In order to catch
the other fellow tho outsider. In
fact, It is said satisfactory agreement
has already been reached between
the resident stock men and hereafter
all efforts will be turned toward the j
non-resident who Invades the coun
try with bands of sheep.
Situation Does Not Improve.
Anyway, tho situation does not
grow any better from the outsider's
standpoint. There is enough range
in Grant county, it Is said, for all of
the resident stock if the other fellow
can be kept out. This is tho question
that agitates. The public domain be
longs to no man and the outsider
arctics ho has as much right to it as
the other fellow. If the resident
stock men had full control of the
ranges of their home counties they
would be all right. There is grass
and to spare to keep all the resident
stock fat arid in good condition, but
frequently it is eaten off by the out
side herds until the situation becomes
serious and before fall there Is little
feed for .anything. This,, the resident
stock 'men fiay Is what makes them
angry,
t Rains Made It Bad.v
The feeling was intensified this
year because rains and bad weather
made Bhearlrfg late in Grant county,
while most of the outside sheep men
got, .their ,llp off before, the bad
nvii.s.
ti'incts mosquitoes.
t im
weather came. Then the foreigners
hurried their sheep Into Grant coun
ty. while the home stock men were
still ranging right around winter
quarters. That gave the foreign stock
man all the best of the range, both to
eat off at the beginning and in choos
ing districts accessible to water and
to other good range. The homo stock
man was indignant in consequence.
Similar in Crook.
Grant county stock conditions are
unique to a certain extent. There Is
nothing like them In Umatilla, Har
ney or Morrow or Gilliam. In Crook
a similar state of affairs exists. There
hr.s been an equal amount of trouble
with as much Bhootlng this year as
iu Grant.
IOWA REPUBLICANS GATHER.
Political Leaders of That State in
Convention at Des Moines.
Des Moines,, la., July 29. All of
the Iowa congressmen and nearly
every republican politician of promi
nence in the state was to be seen
about the Savery hotel today. For
an off year, the interest manifested
in the republican state convention Is
something unusual, and more partic
ularly as there are no contests of
moment to attract attention. Tho
gathering will be called to order in
the auditorium at 11 o'clock tomor
row morning by Congressman Walter
I. Smith, of Council Bluffs. Of tho
1233 delegates most of them had ar
rived before noon today, bringing with
them a host of other visitors Inter
ested In the gathering.
Des Moines Is playing the host in
royal fashion and nothing is bolng
left undone to add to the comfort of
the visitors. An awning has been
stretched half a block along Fourth
street and under Its shade the prom
inent party leaders .are to bo seen to
day discussing the outlook and be
tween times listening to the music
of the famous Iowa State band.
Harmony will be a distinctive feat
ure of the convention. Iowa does
not elect a governor this year, but
all the other olllces are to bo filled,,
from secretary of state down to rall
oad commissioner. The naming of
he ticket, however.attracts little at
lention as tho Incumbents almost
without exception will be renominat
ed. This applies to secretary of
state, auditor, treasurer, attorney
general and Judge of tho supremo
c )urt, leaving only the minor places
on the ticket to bo contested.
Last Federal Convict Pardoned.
Michigan City, Ind., July 29. -By
virtue of a commutation of sentence
granted by President Roosevelt,
Isaac .Sloan, the last federal convict
In tho Indiana state prison was given
his release today, Sloan was sent up
for life In 189D from Kentucky for
killing a secret service agent.
