Milton Men Have Recently Purchased Eight Section of Land in That Country and Will Plant Wheat Tassy Stewart, of Milton, was in the city yesterday evening from his home. He lately returned from the Big Bend country, where he had been in company with other gen tlemen of that city to complete the purchase of a large tract of land in the rich country lying in the bend of the Columbia. In company with Henry Frazier, JameB Elam and N. A. Davis, of Mil ton, Mr. Stewart bought while in the .Big Bend, eight sections of land from Mayor Babcock, of Walla Walla, the price paid being $3 per acre. The land lies east of and five miles from the Columbia river and Just south of the little town of Qulncy, which has just sprung up there. It is located in township 18, range 23. Speaking of the development of that section, Mr. Stewart said that it was going ahead rapidly and that there was every reason to believe that it would soon develop into a great district. Many immigrants coming west over the Northern Pa.- clflc and Great Northern are going into that part of the country and there are new towns springing up right and left Operations are carried on In large way in that part of the country and -on the land owned by Mayor Bab cock, who has one of the biggest tracts in the, .Bfg. Bend, there has been a 3C-horse-power steam thresher working plowing -with 17 breaking plows behind It. The plows go through the sage brush and bunch grass as though, through the softest kind of earth and it Is no trick at all to break several acres ot land in an hour .or so.; , ' The soil there is fine and while the atmosphere is very dry and the country apparently needs irrigation, .almost everything grows to perfection after the,, land ..Is cultivated. In fact the soil is so moist that potatoes of ten .take their second growth before thev are dug. . nomine .home, from -the Big Bend, Mr. "St-Vwt' sayufleldatter field of wneat wnicn uau uueu wunu """" bv the wind, and says that In the country to the south of Spokane there 4b no doubt bqt thousand of dollars worth of damage has been done. Are 'HilsHng THMf Convention at t Joseph Today. St. Joseph, Mo July 22. Sevn hundred delegates and twice 8 many visitors filled the Lyceum theater to day when the democratic state con vention was rapped to order by Jas, M. Seibert, chairman of the state committee. Among the visitors were large daJetloiiy,,?llNL0Oting the 8on,.club. oiajjsaa. City and d,emo critic organizations ln tothei parts of ;the" stated Occupying seats on the stage were Governor Dockery, Sec retary of State .Cookr Hoa. William J; Stone and other democrats promi nent In the councils 0 Palty, Housing speeches by several' 0' these, leaders' occupied the opening hours countenance. "Why; tring togethei of the convention. After the usual routine business had been disposed of a recess was taken to permit the committees on nominations, resolu tions, etc., to prepare their repo.'ts. Though the nominations to be made are only for minor state offices to be filled at the fall election, the con vention Is regarded, nevertheless, as of extraordinary importance. W. B. Carrington will be renominated for state superintendent of public in struction, but there Will be a spirited contest for state railroad and ware house commissioners, active canvases being made by- several aspirants. But it is not in the nominations that the interest centers. Nor is it In the platform, for the resolutions un doubtedly will follow closely thost recently adopted at the Springfield convention. The old party leaders have an eye singly on the organiza tion of the new state committee and the selection of a chairman to suc ceed Mr. Seibert. Between the so called state machine and its enemies it is a war to the death for-the con trol of the committee and It la in the result of this contest that centers the interest of politicians of both parties throughout the state. Shocking Murder by Woman. Vienna, July 22. jA shocking mur der by a woman is reported from Buda Pesth. A jeweler, named Br- aeyi, 5U years or ago, called upon Esther Petroft to demand payment of an installment due on goods she had purchased. The woman, who Is 26 years old and of powerful phy sique, threw herself upon thd Jeweler, and after a desperate struggle threw him on a bed, where she strangled him with her hands. Not content with this, she literally hacked him to pieces with a large knife, and then, wrapping the remains in shawl, placed them in her child's per ambulator, and conveyed thorn out side the town, finally depositing them in a deserted building, after which she returned home. The murderess was arrested through the instrumen tality of a child 3 years of age, who had witnessed the crime from an op posite window. Bids for Wood.
