In Canada it Is a Flourishing and
Profitable Business and There Is
Talk of Introducing it in Oregon.
One of the latest industries which
is liable to be Introduced into the
state of Oregon is frog farming
which may possibly be entered Into
on a large scale at two or three
points.
During the past few years this in
dustry has assumed considerable pro
portions in Canada, where large ship
ments of the edible croakers are not
only sent weekly to the great centers
of the Dominion, but many thousands
of the delicate legs are being regu
larly sent to the epicurian centers oi
the United States.
Referring to the frog industry re
rently, a prominent Canadian news
paper said:
"One of the most successful frog
farms is in Ontario. Last year it pro
duced 5000 pounds of dressed frogs'
legs and 7000 living frogs for scien
tific purposes and for stocking other
waters.
"The deputy commissioner of fish
eries for Ontario reports that in the
past year a number of applications
were made to the government for
leases of land suitable for this indus
try. No licenses were, ' however
granted, as it was found that the ter
ritory concerned was already being
farmed by a number of people.
"It Is safe to assume that in the
very near future much land now idle
will be stocked with frogs. All that
is necessary for this purpose is to
16,000,000 and, 17,000,000 pounds for
the season. By making an average
of estimates, the yield will prosum
ably foot up something like this:
Heppner, 4,000,000 pounds; Arlington
about 2,000,000; Shaniko. between
6.500,000 and 7,000,000; at The Dalles
and other points, the wool Is being
moved out as rapidly as possible.
When the returns from all the dis
tricts are in, it is probable that the
total yield will at least reach the to
tal estimate, and, it may even exceed
it.
Bids for Wood.
Sealed bids will be received by the
directors" of School District No. 16.
Pendleton, Umatilla County, Oregon,
up to August 1st, 1902, for the delivery
of one hundred cords of four-foot
wood, consisting of equal parts of red
fir and black pine, seventy cords to bo
delivered at the High School building,
twenty cords to be delivered at the
Fields school and ten cords at the
school room on Beauregard street.
The board reserves the right to reject
any and all bids. Payment will bo
made in school warrants of this dis
trict JOHN HAILBY,
Dated July 19, 1902. Clerk.

"The species considered here to be
most profitable, on account of Its
size, is the Eastern bullfrog, which
reaches a length of more than eight
inches. It begins to breed at the end
of three years, is very productive and
reaches a marketable size In four or
five years."
There are several points within the
confines of this state at which the
delicious frogs should flourish and
become a very profitable crop if
properly handled and marketed.
One of these places Is at Meach
am, where there are two lakes, or
ponds, which are known to contain
hundreds, if not thousands of the
edible amphibians. Every evening
their joyous croaklngs furnish music
to lull the weary woodchoppers to
sleep and their number is apparently
as the sands of the sea shore.
They are large and frisky and of
the best edible variety and of late
there has been considerable talk of
