Beginning; today and continuing for several weeks to come the eyes of the chess world are to be turned toward this city. The International tournament under the auspices of the Gerniiin Chess asso ciation and the Hanover Chess club commenced tliia- afternoon, when the pairing: of the players took place The actual play, however, Is not to begin until Monday. Among the American experts in attendance are illsbury, Marshall and Napier. Big Inter-Lake Regatta. Toledo, 0 July i9. The harbor and bay are dotted with craft come to take part In the annual regatta of the Interlake Yachting association, to be held during the coming week. De troit, Buffalo, Sandusky and other cities will be represented in the races. Monday the fleet will assem-i ble off Gibraltar Island and a recep tion will be held on the yachts. The opening race will be sailed Tuesday over a fifteen mile triangular course with a nine-mile triangle for tho six teen and twenty footers. The wind ward and leeward races will be sail ed Wednesday, five miles and return for the big boats and a single course for the small ones. Thursday Mill be given over to squadron sail, followed by the annual ball in the evening. On Friday will bo sailed the free-for-ull, the course depending upon the weather conditions. A power boat race is also scheduled for that day. Tho entry list is large and of a high class and with favorable weather conditions the regatta should prove one of the best in the history of the association. Western Tennis Championships. Chicago, III., July 19. The turf courts o the Kenwood Country club were thronged with devotees of tennis today at the opening of the annual western championships, singles and doubles.
