At Least Until Herders Begin
Bringing Their Sheep Off the
Range This Fall, When it May
Break Out Again.
The trouble between sheep and cat
tle men of the Interior country Is ex
periencing a lull. Since the shoot
ing of S. B. Barker's sheep in Bear
Valley on the 18th of June, there has
been "no outbreaks and trouble Is ap
parently at an end for the present
time, says a John Day dispatch.
The occasion of the shooting at
that time was the passing of the
bands of sheep through the country
to Logan Valley and ther range trib
utary thereto. They disregarded the
warnings of the cattle men and un
dertook to pass through. Bear Valley
as it was the shortest route and had
better range along the road for the
sheep. In coming through the vauey
the sheep were allowed to trespass
on what Is .termed as private range,
and the shooting was the result.
As most of the sheep have passed
through towaxd their" summer range,
no more serious trouble Js anticipat
ed until fall, when they will begin to
return to the winter range In the
lower sections. No trouble will then
be had If the Bheep men regard the
warnings of the cattle men and keep
off what 1b- termed private range. If.
they do not trouble will again be
had. If they do not the same old
story will be repeated.
There are conceded trails through
the settled part of the country and
the sheep herders , are supposed to
follow these. - ',
If not, the' long Missouri rifle which
every settler has hangipg pn the wall
of his home', c6mes down and rouble
immediately begins. Spring and fall
there-lire herders refusing to obey
these laid down mandates ' and they
are the' on.es whq .suffer. '
The outside sheep man does not
"believe in he alleged rights of the
settler In dictating the road they
shall follow. He contends that all
government range belongs to
irian' as well as the other, and the
mere argument that a man la a set
tler near the government iana uoes
not affect It
The Inside man. on the contrary,
argues thatt iresidence; gives' a;prJor

argument, he becomes a desperate
