FOR EXPERTING BOOKS.
Said He Would Pay Arthur Holmes'
Account of $50 for Expertlng City
Books Himself Paid No Attention
to Mellmann Franchise.
The city council last evening:
Overlooked the Mellman-Romo
franchise.
Received semi-annual reports.
Audited bills and allowed
claims.
Judge Hartman became angry
and tore up bill of Arthur
Holmes for $50 for expertlng
city's books.

The Mellmann-Rotno application
for a franchise to run an electric car
line and operate trains through the
city was not referred to at the meet
ing of the city council last night.
The senli-annual report of the city
recorder and treasurer were receiv
ed, looked over and ;,approved.
The bills for the past month were
audited -and allowed with tho excep
tion of a bill for ?50 from Arthur
Holmes for expertlng the city's
books. When this bill was presented
Councilman Hartman became angry
and tore the bill to atoms, scattering
it on the floor and declared he would
pay the bill out of his own pocket
The council refused to allow the
bill and cut it to ?30" before the Judge
tore It up. The recorder says Hart
man will have to .stay with his dec
laration, as sinco the bill is destroy
ed he cannot draw a warrant to
cover It

rates on butter, eggs, cheeso and pour
try were advanced to normal basis
today by Western" railroads. Tho ad
vance ranges from 20 to 35 cents per
100 pounds from St. Paul and Mis
souri river points to Chicago, with
comparative Increases from Interme
diate points. It Is conservatively os-!
tlmated that 1,000,000 pounds- of but-1
ter, cheese, eggs and poultry are ro '
celved in Chicago dally and about
75 per cent of tho traffic goes oast.'
lho advance in rates averages about
$4 per ton, making a daily Increase- in
tho revenues o fthe railroads from
this traffic of $2,000 a day, or about (
three quarters of a million dollars
per annum.
