Baker City has engaged both Joe
Mahaffey, the pitcher, who has been
playing with the Portland league team
all summer, and his brother, Lou, who
has been with the same team.
Dan Downey, employed at the
scouring mills,, is nursing two badly
mashed fingers. While working
among the machinery of the mill on
Wednesday, and wrapping some bur
laps around a pulley, his hand caught
in the rollers and it was with, great
effort and presence of mind that ho
escaped more serious injury. As it
was, two of the fingers were badly
mashed and he will be compelled to
lay off duty for several days.

The DIscoTery of Dynamite.
Alfred Nobel as far back as 1848,
during a residence in France, produced
the first nitroglycerin powder that was
then known. It was in Hamburg that
he discovered by chanco dynamite
guhr. Some of his powder-had trickled
out of a disk on to the damp soli and
become spoiled by the infusorial earth.
This was a happy accident, for ns soon
as tho moisture had evaporated ho
found that one part of this earth to
three parts of nitroglycerin not only
improved Its substance as an explo
sive, but made it safer for handling.
In 1870 Nobel dissolved nitrocellulose
In nitroglycerin, which gave it a more
gelatinous substance. After this he
found that tho more gelatinous cellu
lose wan mixed in the nitroglycerin the
more solid it becamo and tho more
slowly It burned, both of which were
Important discoveries. Of this sub
stance he made a fuse, only to find
that It was hardly satisfactory because
It .had not sufficient strength to act as a
