GENERAL NEWS.
The capitalization of new corpora
tions in the East during June was
$19C,1S2,S00, the smallest of any pre
vious month this year.
The total appropriations of con
gress during the session ended Tues
day were over $800,000,000. The to
tal last year was ?730,000,000.
Reports received at Chicago from
all over the "West and Northwest in
dicate that the damage to crops from
rain is less than at first reported.
"Warm July weather will remedy the
wet June.
The British consulate's report
shows that the exports to the United
States for the past quarter were
11,952,559, an increase of $224,424.
For the fiscal year the exports were
$8,234,607; an increase of $1,619,015.
Judge Sampson, Tuesday, at Min
neapolis, sentenced Captain N. "W.
King, of the detective force, to three
years and six months at hard Inhnr in
the penitentiary at Stillwater. King1,
was convicted of being accessory
after the fact, to a felony.
One hundred thousand men emnlov-
ed by the United States Steel Corpo
ration will receive an advance in!
wages of 10 per cent, which will in- j
crease the annual payroll of the Steel j
Corporation by $4,000,000. The ad
vance applies to union as well as non
union men.
Bank notes amounting to $6500'
have been found hidden in two toma
to cans in the cellar of the residence
of the late Mrs. E. Loenna Elmstedt,
at Washington Heights, Chicago.
Thereabouts of the greenbacks
which belonged to the estate of John I
Elmstedt, was a secret which the wo-j
man carried with her to the grave.
She was under order of the probate,
court to produce the money there,'
but never complied with it. For herj
refusal to part with the notes, Mrs.;
Elmstedt served nine months in jail!
for contempt of court. "With all this
money buried, Mrs. Elmstedt was
starving to death when removed to a
hospital by the police.

Heavy rains in the Willamette val
ley are reported to have ruined the
hay crop.
Rudolph Gassner, a rancher near
Portland, drove his team onto a live
wire at the corner of Nineteenth and
Flanders streets In that city, 'Wed
nesday, and both horses were killed.
Rucker Rogers, the escaped Walla
Wallla convict, Is supposed to have
been definitely located on a ranch be
tween La Grande and Island City,
and his capture Is confidently expect
ed.
George W. Beebe, postmaster at
Sheridan, has been appointed receiver
of the United StateB land office at
Oregon City but .cannot take his office
until he can get rid of the .Sheridan
postofflce.
The body of W. T. Klssenger, the
man who murdered Mrs. Ada Garner,
and then killed himself at Boise,
Idaho, was buried at Fall Creek, the
man's home, near Eugene, Wednes
day, Attorney Charles KIssengor, his
brother, having arrived there Tuesday
night with the body,
Letson Balllett, recently convicted
of fraudulent use of the United States
malls, In connection with the sale of
stock in the White Swan mine near
Baker City, is again advertising with
nip old-time verbosity and exacKera-
lion. The latest appearance of his
-fake advertisements being a full page
-write-up in Harper's magazine.

will be the glorious Fourth and
everything Is in readjnesss in this
city for the proper celebration of the
day. A huge parade will be given in
the forenoon, a program of addresses
and music will fo!.low, and In the
afternoon sports and a ball game will
take up the time. In thcevemng two
dances will be given, one by the
band and another by the fire depart
ment. Special trains will be run from Day
ton and Waitsburg, and from Eureka
Flat - country, arriving about 10
o'clock.
A large crowd is expected in this
city. A feature which will bring
crowds In the evening will be a dis
play of fireworks which is promised
to eclipse any former attempt in this
line of entertainment.
Increase in Schools.
The city of Walla Walla has In
creased in school population to the
number of 60 in the past year, as
shown by a census just completed 'by
J. W. Shepherd and J. C. Ryan. The
totnl number of persons of school age1
found in the four wards of the city!
is 2371, as against 2311 last year '
The total for the school district has.
not been secured as the figures have,
not been compiled for the outlying,
section. In one ward, the decrease!
numbered 49. It is expected that a
material increase will be shown for.
the district as a whole.
Well Known Farmer Dead. j
B. H. Bussell, a pioneer of this val
ley, and a wealthy farmer, died at
his farm Tuesday night from injuries
received while driving a young horse.
He was 71 years of age and leaves a
family of grown children, his wife be-.
ing quite feeble. Mr. Bussell was
among the early pioneers of Walla
Walla valley, and had resided contin-'
uously upon his farm, several miles
from this city. Funeral services were
held today, interment being in thei
Valley Chapel cemetery. I
The Electric Franchise.
A franchise has been granted by
the city council to F. B. Romo and
H. Mellmann for the purpose of allow
ing them to operate a general elec
tric business in this city and lay
rails for the construction of a Btrteet!
railway along the streets of the city,
passing through the city from, east to
west. A forfeit of $2000 in cash has
been posted that work will begin
within six months and the line will
be completed within two years. For
the franchise the parties are to pay
a nominal fee to the city annually,
