GOMMERGE - TRADE
PRICE OF SPRING CHICKENS
HAS "GONE DOWN.
Too Many Have Been Rushed Into
the Market General Fruits Are
Now Appearing on the Market
New Tomatoes and Peaches Have
Just Appeared.
With the exception of spring chick
ens there has been no change in the
local market for the past week. One
week ago the young and tender frys
were retailing at $3.50 per dozen and
today they are quoted at ?2.50 and ?3
This shows a change of $1 in the doz
en and is caused by the supply being
as great as the demand.
A great many farmers bavo been
bringing the product o their henner
ies to town and disposing of tnem
for Groceries and cash and conse-
auentlv the markets have been rush
ed" a little to the cutting of price
on fowls. When young chickens are
selling at $3 and upwards per dozen
and it takes from two to four to make
any small family a meal, it is some
what Hit eatintr cold dust, but at
$2.50 a dozen people will eat more
Other staple articles, such as sug
ar. coffee, teas, salt and canned
coods remain the same. All have a
strong tendency with no change ex
nected for some time to come.
RVuMs nrp. now anDearing on the
market in more varieties. The straw
berry crop Is becoming depleted and
it -will take only a few more weeks
to take them off the market entirely.
They are selling at three boxes for
a. nnarter.
Apricots were about the next fruit
- Thev have been in the
market for a week and next came
cherries. This fruit has just made
its appearance and selling at 10 cents
per box, or three for 25 cents,-
New tomatoes are aiso on me mar

Peaches have also maae ineir ap

Wheat in Portland.
Portland, June 19. The Commer
cial Review- in its issue today, says
of the wheat .market:
With little demand for wheat and
weaker cables, declining prices In
Put ope, values on .spot here are not
very firm and would-be sellers find
the situation extremely unsatisfactory
and more than ever agalast them.-
Business is running very light nnd in
the absence of important transac
tions, it is quite difficult to say just
what the selling price Is; 65 to 06
cents per bushel for club would be
cons'ldcred extreme by oxportors, GGo
for valley and G7c for bluestem. Of
forings of Walla Walla club have
been small, while valley wheat
oven scarcer. However, the stock of
fering has no effect as regards values
for shippers will only work business
when sellers are willing to meet tho
market. As holders find no comfort
in Quotations they aro slow Bollors
and as abovo intimated, trading is of
very small proportions. Receip'.s
and shipments were light . and tho
final clearance of one vessel now In
the river loading wheat and flour will
,wiud up tho grain season of 1901-2.
In referenco to crop prospects com
pared with a year ago, tho same is
a few weeks backward. Tho outlook
is quite favorablo for a largo crop.
Some loss will bo noted in tho fall
sown grain that had to bo resccded,
and it is doubtful whether tho ylolds
will turn out as largo as the two pre
vious seasons.
Wheat In San Francisco.
Is
hardly anything doing on export ac-
count, shippers having no special
needs taJUl, nnd for some time bust.
ncss lias ueon connnea largely to
millers' operations Sailings so far
this month have been very light. It
is doubtful whether much will bo ac
complished in the shipping of grain
of any kind. Crop conditions show
no change as from that previously re
ported. Quotations aro for No. 10
shipping, $1.10 per cental; milling,
$1.11 and $1.13.
