Sorry--We lhlriSSrdict-I hope the book, nro DON'T WANT TO CARRY HORSES. Western Roads Kick on "Baggage" for Uncle Sam's Soldiers. According to a Chicago special to the Pioneer Press, the railroads of the West arc protesting against hav ing to haul for the government all kinds of military supplies as "bag gage" for the soldiers. The government has insisted that the usual allowance of 150 pounds of baggage, made by the railroads to the general public, be made for each sol-i lint nnrr.ofl I For example, if 100 soldiers and n'guillS as I haVO hail Oil 111)' rreignt car load ot military equip-! mcnt are transported, the government j insists that a reduction of 15,000 ' pounds be made from the carload ! weight, and that it pay regular j freight rates only on the remainder. About 10 years ago the Southern! Pacific railroad was sustained byj the government in its contention that soldiers have no "personal baggage,". that everything in the possession of the soldiers when traveling is really owned by the government. Under this ruling the government paid for the transportation of all mil itary equipment, in addition to the fare of the soldiers. The government reversed that ruling, howee, about' three years ago, and since then has 1 adhered "to a rule that the railroads 1 must carry free 150 pounds of mill-1 tary equipment for every soldier. transported. As a result, the rail roads have been carrying as ""bag. gage" rapid-fire guns, ammunition and even .horses. At its meeting recently, the exec utive committee of the Western Pas senger Association decided to require the controller of the treasury to ln-i struct the quartermaster-general ofj the army to specify, whenever asking 1 for bids for the transportation of! ........... nnm...i. rf W ! 1 f .1 '1 1 111 (. They don't object to hauling wearing apparel and toilet articles of soldiers as baggage, but protest that cautious and horses should not be classified as baggage. COMMENCEMENT AT WESTON.
