Shortly.
"Poor Ln Grande I"
"What Is the matter with the Beet
Pullers?"
"Aro thoy ever going to got n
team that can play ball?"
Theso are tho remarks ami ques
tions that aro being heard nowadays
among tho fans of Eastern Oregon.
The Pendleton baseball team has
returned from La Grando, whero thoy
found tho Beet Pullers an easy mark
in two games and it would havo been
the same hnd tho Monday's gnmo not
been called olt on account of ralnT
A heavy downpour caused this
gamo to bo called oft In tho second
inning, when the score stood 5 to 1
in favor of tho Pendleton boys. Ifnd
It been played out, tho result would
havo undoubtedly boon tho samo, as
tho Indians wero going Btrong, whllo
the local lads wero plainly off tholr
feed.
In the Sunday gamo tho Pendleton
players won by a scoro of 23 to 2
and tho Tuesday's gamo was won by
the Indians by a scoro of 13 to 7.
Only seven lanlngs wero played.
This brings tho per cent column of
tho La Grando players down to 182,
and they will havo to got a hustle
on to redeem themselves. It Is said
thnt tho Ln Grando team Is compos
ed of good players, but thoy are, play.
Ing out of luck.
Thp 'PondlQton team returned home
last night and are reunj' to cross bats
with tho Dayton team next 'Friday
afternoon.
Two games nro scheduled to tako
place in this city with tho Hop
Pickers from Everett on Saturday
and Sunday, tho 14th and 15th Inst.
It will bo remembered that tho Ev
erett players aro tho only team that
won out with tho Pendleton team
after leaving Walla Walla on their
tour of a few weeks ago, and theso
games will ho looked forward to
with much interest by tho locnl fans
Tho Everett team has tho name of
being ono of tho strongest aggrega
tions of players In the Inland Emplro
and the Indians will havo to play ball
to stay in tho ring with thorn. How'
ever, Pendleton Is proud of tho rec
ord of her players nnd tho local fans

A Clean Up
ON BOUND BOOKS
Where Briefness Went.
A Southern newspaper man, of not
a great amount of experience outsldo
of the small city ln which ho resides,
tells a story that may furnish a les
son to many beginners, and to not a
few men who consider themselves
pretty well versed in tho business.
Tho man who occasionally sent mat
ter to ono of tho Now York dnllles,
picked up last summer what seemed
to him a "big story." Hurrying to
tho telopragh ofilco ho aBked tho tol-
egraph editor: "Column story and
so on. Shall I send It?" Tho reply
was brief and prompt, hut to tho en
thusiast unsatisfactory. "Send COO
words," was all it said. "Can't bo
told In less than 1200," ho wired
back. Before long tho reply camo:
"Story of creation of world told in
COO. Try it." Thero's a valuablo les
son here.
