STATE RETURNS.
Count Still Unfinished and Returns
Are Very Slow in Coming.
Portland, Juno 4. Returns from
four or five counties, where "the re
turns were incomplete yesterday, are
not yet in, but Chamberlain's lead of
1000 will probably not he reduced.
Furnish has not yet conceded his
defeat, however.
Today's figures indicate the elec
tion of a majority of the republican
candidates for the legislature, insur
ing a successor to Simon, who, al
though a republican, was opposed to
the ticket.
In twenty Incomplete precincts in
the city, where the count is not yet
finished, indicate that Chamberlain is
leading Multnomah county hy 300 to
400.
Williams is known to bo elected
mayor of Portland hy at least 500.
The other city and county offices will
all he republican, except Werlein, on
the citizens' ticket, for city treasur
er. W. A. Story, for sheriff, is the
only republican in doubt.
The Very Latest.
Later The last figures for gover
nor show Multnomah county 628S for
Chamberlain, and 5384 for Furnish.
Twenty precincts are yet to hear from
in which a partial count shows an
apparent even break so that it looks
like Chamberlain will have above COO
in this county. The other counties
outside this showed up this morning
almost, even, but the latest figures
give Chamberlain gains. The contest
is still close, but the outlook for
Chamberlain is slightly better than
this morning.
CHAMBERLAIN
IS STILL 5SFE
Despite Reports to the Contrary His Plurality is Still in the
Neighborhood of 1,000 H. C, Adams Elected
Instead of C. E. Macomber,
The sale of fine shoes of American
manufacture in Canada has trebled
in five years. It is estimated that It
will this year amount to $900,000.
Although the majorities as estimat
ed yesterday have been considerably
cut down, It Is firmly established to
day that George E. Chamberlain has
been selected by tho people of Ore
gon as their next governor, by a ma
jority of from 600 to 1000, while the
balance of the republican state ticket
has been successful.
Last night considerable excitement
was caused by a report gaining circu
lation to the effect that the returns
from some of the southern counties
had given Furnish such majorities as
to place' him in the lead, hut today's
developments fall to verify the ru
mor. But little new information regard
ing the election was received today,
but it is confidently announced that
Chamberlain is tho winner. In fact,
the democratic candidate telephoned
to headquarters in this city during
the day that, allowing Mr. Furnish
the same majorities as received by
Governor Geer in 1900, in tho coun
ties not yet. heard from, he, (Cham
berlain) would go to Salem with 1000
or better.
In addition, Chamberlain has ap
parently carried Multnomah county
by about COO votes. This gives him
a lead of C50 at a rough estimate.
These figures are partly made up
from the returns at present received
and partly from estimates on tho
partial results in counties not yet
complete, and aro not "official.
It Is now plainly evident thnt it will
require tho official count to definitely
decide the gubernatorial contest. It
would appear, however, that tho re
publican state ticket Is elected with
majorities of from 7000 to 10,000.
As at present estimated, tho legis
lature will probably stand:
Senate Republicans, 20; demo
crats, 10.
Hous? Republicans, 40 demo
crats, 30.
Adams Elected Over Macomber.
One of tho most startling develop
ments in the county situation today
was tho discovery of tho fnct that ac
cording to tho returns now In, H. C.
Adams has beaten C. B. Macomber
for representative by a plurality of
45. It was at first thought that
Messrs. Macomber and Blakley hnd
been elected as representatives for
this county in tho state legislature,
but the figures In today show Mr. Ad
ams to have received 1029 votes as
against Mr. Macombor's 1548.
Three precincts, Gilliland, Mount
ain and Vancycle are not yet in, and
probably will not bo received until
tho official count is made, as the peo
ple in charge o tho count In these
precincts did not keep any tally out
side their official report, which they
have sealed in tho ballot boxes.
Following are tho pluralities of tho
various successful candidates In thla
county as at present figured up at
democratic hendquarters:
Stato ticket Chamberlain, 273;
ltcan, 5G9; Dunbar, 290; Mooro, 678;
Williamson, 378; Goor, 63; Plorco,
05; I'holps, 201; Ackonnau, IS3; Ha
ley. 681; Whitney. 720.
County ticket Smith, 664; Adams,
45; Blakley, plurality over Adams and
majority over other candidates, 304;
Taylor, 671; Chamberlain, for coun
ty clerk. 269; Kolsom, 228; Sommor
vlllo, 134; Strain, 251; Klmbroll, 629;
Cole, 162; Gilliland, 162; Fits Gorald,
64; and Bontloy, 12.
No Celebration.
There will bo no public colouration
or Jublleo over tho outcomo, the dem
ocrats realizing that but for tho as
sistance rendered by dlssatlsllcd re
publicans they would not havo boon
so successful.
Another Report.
Portland. Juno 4. ll'lio total vote
on governor throughout tho statu la
close. Present figures glvo Chamber
lain 622 majority, In which somo ot
tho counties uro estimated. At tho
democratic hoadqunrtcrs the claim Is
made that much, giving Furnish tho
benefit of tho doubt overywhoro. It
Is reasonably curtain that Chamber
Iain will win, though somo doubt still
remains.
Inman Is dofoatod for mayor of
Portland by 200, according to tho re
turns now In, but 15 precincts aro to
bo heard from and their votes may
chango tho rosult. McDonald, asses
sor, and Worlon, city treasurer, of
Portland, aro oloctod. Drlscoll, sher
iff, is apparently oloctod on tho citi
zens' ticket, bjtt this Is not sure. Tho
remainder of tho republicans aro
olectod In thlH city and county.
