According to advices from Portland work on the Rinaria-Lewlston exten sion of the O. R. & N. will commence not later than June 15. The compa ny expects to nave trains running in to Lewlston by the latter part of Sep tember. Nothing could bo learned of the company's plans of entrance Into the town or whether the Snake or Clearwater will be bridged. There Is a growing sentiment among those pretending to know Rnmethin of the railroad nians. that the O. R. & N. will run its line from Riparia entirely along the nortli bank of the Snake river, and will put tho Lewiston yard and station grounds on the north side of Lapwai, north of Lewiston. From there the line will continue up the north bank of the Clearwater to a junction with the Northern Pacific at Potlatch Junc tion. The belief In the lmmdelate con struction of the Lapwai branch ex tension to tho Granfeeville and Nez PorrA r-rumt rlp Is trrowlnir. and it Is now certain that tho Kettenbach and Vollmer-Clearwater Grain companies that had intended to out in a grain tramway at Pardee have decided not to build, having received advice from the railroad company not to do so. College Athletes In Competition. Chicago, May 31. It is a difficult matter to pick the winners in the big Western, intercolegiate athletic meet at Marshal Field his afternoon. Keene Fitzpatrick of the University of Michigan expects to cany off the EXPEDIENTS, honors, but both coaches Stngg of Chicago and Kilpatrlck of Wisconsin appear confident of giving tho Wol verines a hard tussle for first place. Norte Dame, Iowa, und tho other in stitutions entered ar not without hopes of capturing tho most and as all have entered their V3;y strong est men tho meet promises to bo a record breaker. The program is one of the longest ever prep" red for a western meet, comprising fourteen events. , Pelce Is Quieted.
