I beg to call your attention to the fact that on July 1, 1900, our Interest bearing debt was $185,077.97, and our actual debt was ?102,103.03, that Is taking the cash in hand and making a liberal estimate on the value of the delimjuent tax es, our actual debt or net debt was $102,103.03. On Mav 1st, 1902, our interest bear ing debt" was $u3,381.S3, and our ac tual or not debt was $60,992.83, thus making a decrease in our interest hearing debt of $91,G9G.lt, and in our actual or net debt of $41,110.73 in twenty-two months. This has been done in the face of the fact that the levy for the year 1900 did not "meet the current expenses and interest by $40,000. Our interest charge has reached as high as $15,000 per an num, but under present conditions can scarcely exceed $6000, and with a few years more of economical man agement can be wiped out entirely, and It should be done, for as rich a county like this should not pay in terest. Tou will note that the reduction in our debt has been made in the past twenty-two months. rector of the Church of the Redeem or in this city. Attorney James A. It Is a pleasure to state that the,,,,. .,, i.nm is in that cltv. r it.- -t t it , 'r'"t worked studiously to curtail ex penses, and they have succeeded as will be shown by comparison with former years. The saving in the clerk's office has been $1815.55. This should not all be credited to the present incumbent, as some of his work was given to the recorder, but there has been a saving to the coun ty of at least $1000. The recorder', office Is now ' self-supporting for the first time since the, office was creat ed. The sheriff's office shows a sav ing of ?43G9, while the actual saving has been at least $6500, which was accounted for by reason of the shei iff doing the constable's work on his salary and without extra expense; while under former administrations It was done by Alex Hudson and M. J. Carney, who says it belongs to the constable and it is to be presum ed he would not do it in case he (Car ney) is elected sheriff. It is expensive to put new men in office for they lack experience and without reflecting on the present in cumbents it is safe to sav that the deputies can carry on the work with the snme economy that ha3 been the watchwork for the past two years County warrants have been nromnt- ly cauea and interest Etopned as fast as funds have come into the treasurer's hands, but in face of the fact the present incumbent was turned down when there was a gen eral approval of the conduct of thn office.
