II Governor Geer, called upon Chairman Jack Matthews, of the republican state central committee and wanted to know if this announcement was of ficial. The result of their interview was that Chairman Matthews declar ed Multnomah county would never support Mr. Fulton for the senate. This, and other incidents, have caus ed such a storm of disagreement and quarrelings at the republican state central committee's headquarters in this city as to sow the seeds of de feat. On the other hand, every thing is serene at the democratic state head quarters, and such encouraging news is received from day to day as to paint the political skies a rosy hue for those who follow the banner of Mr. Chamberlain and his fellow nom inees. As to the inflated reports that are sent out by the opposition and print ed in their newspapers, it is fairly submitted to the people of each coun ty to judge for themselves. If you have been reported as having magni ficent demonstrations when you had them not, you may judge that reports from other counties have been simi larly misrepresented. It is urged, however, even although victory seem assured, that constant! vigilance should be exercised from faithfully done. Two years ago he took charge of the county clerk's of fice and in a short time brought or der out of confusion. He systemiz ed the work and put the files in order. Owing to better methods in the con duct of the office a substantial sav ing has been made to the taxpayers. The expense of the clerk's office from July 1, 1S9S, to May 1, 1900, under County Clerk Burroughs, amounted to S,S8".5S. During the same period of time under Mr. Chamberlain's ad ministration, from July 1, 1900, to May 1, 1902. the total cost of the of fice has been $7,348.98. The differ ence amounting to $1,53S.G0, has been saved to the taxpayers. In addition to this direct saving of expense, it must be borne in mind that the volume of business transact ed in the clerk's office has greatly exceeded the volume of business oi the two preceeding years. Mr. Cham berlain in one term has proved him self competent, careful and economi cal. One good term deserves another.
