Entire State Watching Umatilla County The Battle Grounds In the campaign Are Multnomah, Marion and Umatilla Counties. Portland, May 17. The people of Umatilla county will be interested and gratified to learn something con cerning the campaign of Colonel James H .Raley, democratic nominee for attorney-general. It gives me pleasure to report flattering pros pects for the colonel, who, I find, has hosts of friends in all parts of the state. Colonel Raley stands in a peculiar position in that he has absolutely the solid support of his party, with out exception in any county of the state, while at the same time drawbl heavily from the forces or nis oppo nent. In the .first place, as everyone there will know, he has the confi dence of the business and profession al men, who know from their experi ence in dealing with the colonel, that he is a safe and reliable, cautious and conscientious man.. He also has the friendship of the laboring vote and I am confident that they will look favorably upon his candidacy. The career of Colonel Raley makes him peculiarly strong, and I have heard absolutely no one say anything excepting favorably of his appear ance before the people as a candi date. At the state headquarters we look confidently to a rolling up of a magnificent vote for Colonel Raley, and the prospects are growing brighter every day for his election on June 2. For the second time during the campaign we are receiving careful statements from workers throughout the state as to the condition existing at this time. These reports Indicate a stronger position than a week ago. To quote an assertion contained in a former letter: "There have been practically no losses, while there have been substantial increases in many quarters." An astonishing feature of the campaign is the tremendous demand for "Chamberlain" buttons in East em Oregon. This is true from Wasco county east to the Idaho line. The entire state is watching Uma tilla county with intense interest. Umatilla, Marion and Multnomah I counties are the three strategis points. We have assurances from Marion county that Chamberlain will carry it. We are assured here that he will carry this county, and we would like to present Umatilla as the third in the trinity of the most important counties going for ' George E. Chamberlain for governor. The Portland Journal says: It leaked out that the republican state central committee has made careful poll of Multnomah county and has found that the voters stanu at this time as follows: .tJignt tnousaua voters were seen Democrats, 2200. Chamberlain republicans, 3000. Republicans, 2800. It is reported from an accurate au thoritj that the poll has caused con sternation among the managing committee. And it is therefore known why the committee gave out such padded figures yesterday. Political Notes. The progress of the campaign thus far in Linn county, is decidedly fav orable to the democratic ticket Chamberlain will have a majority of not less than 800 over Furnish, and It may be considerably greater.saydem ocrats familiar with conditions in that county. The registration in the coun ty is about 1000 short. The first open campaign meeting of the republican party will be in Pen dleton, May 26, when W. J. Furnish repumican candidate tor governor will address the voters. Mr. Furnish has been conducting a vigorous cam paign In the Willamette valley, and is still on the west side. The Astorian thinks that C. W. Ful ton's chances for United States sena tor are splendid. It says if W. J. Fur nish is elected governor, there is no doubt that his influence and position will be used for Mr. Fulton, and in this is the importance of the election of Clatsop county. Frank Baker's Betting. vine j'ortianu welcome says: "Frank Baker, who wins a barrel of money every year betting on elec tion, will again wager quite a stake this time. Mr. Baker does not Jump at conclusions. He has friends in every county in the state, and just before ho places any money he writes them and ascertains the sit uation exactly. He has written to his friends and now ho is of the opinion that Chamberlain is a sure winner.
