TALLMAN & Berry, Who Passed Checks on Banks In Which rie Had No Money, Gets Six Years at Salem. Sheriff W. M. Blakley and Deuuty C. P. Davis left on this morning's west-bound. O. R, & N. train with Thomas James and R. B. Berry, tak ing them to Salem to serve three and six years respectively in the penlten tiary. James is the man who was arrested by Policeman Pee two weeks ago foi burglarizing Brock & McComas' drug store. The prosecuting attorney was a little lenient upon him because of his age. Berry is the young man who, waa arrested in Colfax some time ago and brought back to Frcewator on the charge of obtaining money under false pretense. Berry had only been in Freewater a short time until he bargained with A. S. Pearson, thes real estate man of that town, for h8 property and business, and a check for $4i was given as a forfeit. This check was drawn on the First Nation al Bank of Pendleton and Berry told Pearson not to present the chock un til after the first of May, for his motv ey had been loaned out and would again be placed in the bank at that time. Mr. Pearson had business in Pendleton before the time that he was to present the check and he went to the bank to ascertain if Berry had money loaned out that had been in the bank. Nothing was found to his credit and Mr. Pearson went back home. About that time Berry left Freewater for Colfax and Mr. Pearson wired the officers to catch him as he stepped from the train. Before leav ing Freewater, however, he uttered another check and obtained money c,i it and borrowed some money, getting into the people of Freewater for over $100. It was also learned that Berry had stolen a watch in Waitsburg and a bicycle in walla wana oeiore com ing to Oregon, and it was the appar ently crooked character of the young man that caused him to get such a heavy sentence. They both pleaded guilty. CORRECT Are the new patterns in wall paper we arc show ing. Our stock has that bright new appearance because all our stock is of this season's styles. ARTISTIC DECORATOR AND PAPER DEALER COURT STREET TWO LITTLE WAIFS." That Is the Name of the Play at the Frazer Tonight. The latest play from the pen of Lincoln J. Cartel- will be seen at the Frazer Opera House, tonight. tThe piece is said to abound with thrilling incidents, comedy, surprises, pathos and passion, and is ccredited with being the very best of Mr. Carter's efforts. The story hinges on the lives of two twin sisters, who, unknown to each other, are the temporary cause of many intricate misunderstandings. Both parts are played by one person, and the constant and rapid changing from the one to the other is manipula ted with such adroitness that the au dience is loathe to believe that two people are not engaged in the work. As the wife, she is lovable, affection ate and true; as the adventuress she is utterly devoid of all kindness, truthfulness and honor. One can fcarcely believe that the same woman, could in one scene depict the kind ness of heart, the motherly love for the two starving waifs, the faithful ness of a deserted wife, the honor anJ self-sacrillcing princople of a woman who believes her husband to be trua and in the next, be as villainous and deceptive as she was good and beau tiful. The "Two Little Waifs" as played by the Lamb children, is said to be better suited for their particular kind of acting than any piece they have ever attempted. Good Crop Prospects. Indianapolis, Ind., May 1C The an nual crop report of the Lake Erie & Western railroad shows that the con ditions along the line are favorable for a good crop of wheat, corn and oats. Fruit is also in good condition with the exception of peaches, which have suffered from the cold weather. The wheat acreage is about the same as last year in Ohio, and it is ex pected that the yield will be from 14 to 25 bushels an acre. The oats pros pect Is also good in Ohio, and in some places it is thought that the acreage will be 50 per cent, greater than last vear. The corn crop is estimated to be from 15 to 30 per cent, heavier than last year. The conditions In In diana and Illinois are about the same as in Ohio, and the report shows that many farmers have large quantities of com stored.
