Seattle Parties Promoting an Ore gon and Washington Flour Com bine to Unite With That of Call fornia To Regulate Output and Restrict Each State to Its Own Territory. W. S. Byers, of the Pendleton flouring mills, does not intend to take stock in the Pacific Coast Flour trust, which promoters are endeavor ing to form. "If the combine wants my plant," he said to a representative of the Portland Telegram, "they must buy. me out, and pay me the cash for it. I Ihave always succeeded when I managed my business alone, but with a partner my experience has been quite different." Mr. Byers says tbe mills of the east have all been drawn into a combine, and that those of Califor nia have also formed an association, evidently for the purpose of regulat ing the territory in which each must sell and excluding Oregon flour from the San Francisco market. "In Oregon and Washington there are about 5U flouring mills," he said, "and competition is keen although wheat is dear. I am now paying 5o cents a bushel, for wheat and at the ruling price for flour I am not more than coming out even. Millmen, however, get a better profit on the sale of wheat we call "offal," the bran, middlings, shorts, etc., as there is a good local demand for this fod der everywhere. If it were not for this "offal" we would soon have to go out of business. "Mr. Thompson, of the Centennial I mills, In Seattle, has been trying for some .time to get us all into a com bine, so that competition may cease. Portland and Seattle mills have been shipping great quantities of flour to cnjna and Siberia, on commission, of late and the markets of Asia have been thus overstocked. This has caused a depression in the Hour market, which the proposed combine would try to remedy. "But I shall not join any combine. The policy of selling out to a gener al pool and taking watered stock in the resulting trust as payment I do not consider a good one. My flour finds its way into the markets of San Francisco and to all the com mercial centers, and its good name assures its continued sale. I think I can stand alone and manage my business just as well, even should the Pacific Coast Flour trust materi alize." Mr. Byers' mill has a capacity of 800 barrels per day, and he has wheat enough to keep the rollers grinding until the new crop appears in August. Present indications, he says, Justify the expectation of a largo wheat yield in the Columbia Basin this year. The flour of the great northwest is about the only staple commodity that has thus far escaped the clutches of the trusts and the con sequence is flour is still obtainable at a reasonable price, while all the articles in the provision market have managed to boom prices. The poor naturally use more grain produtcs since meat, milk, butter, etc., have advanced, but should the Pacific Coast Flour Trust materialize the poor man's table will then be en tirely in the hands of monopoly. Holds up a Congressman. "At tho end of the campaign," writes Champ Clark, Missouri's bril liant congressman, "from overwork, nervous, tension, loss of sleep and constant sepaklng I had utterly col lapsed. It seemed that all the organs of my body were out of order, but three bottles of Electric Bitters made me all right. It's the best all-round medicine over sold over a druggist's counter." Overworked, run down men and weak, sickly women gain splendid health and vitality from Electric Bitters. Try them. Only 50c. Guaranteed by TalJmarr & Co. Last call for tho dish club.
