Washington, May 8. President
Roosevelt today affixed his signature
to the proclamation declaring Fort
Hall Indian reservation open to set
tlement. Following is a synopsis ot
the proclamation
The lands within the Fort Hall In
dlan reservation In Idaho, ceded by
the treaty with the Shoshoncs and
Bannock Indians, ratitied by act of
June 6, 1900 (31 sta. 672) amount
ing" to about 400,000 acres, will be un
der the terms of the president's proc
lamation, except as to lands within
five miles of the town of Pocatollo,
open to settlement and entry under
the homestead, townsite, stone and
timber and mining laws of the Uhited
States, on June 17 next, at 12 o'clock
noon, mountain time, at the Black
foot land office, Idaho.
These lands have been classified as
agricultural and grazing lands and
will be rated at $2.25 per acre, re
spectively, and one-fifth thereof will
be required of entrymen at the rate
of the original entry, the remaining
four-fifths to be paid at the time of
making final proof and rinal entry.
By the terms of the act ratifying
the agreement made with the Indians,
lands upon which any Indian had im
provements have been allotted to
such of the Indians as desired to re
main upon the lands so improved by
them, and improvements upon lands
which the Indians did not desire to
retain as an allotment will bo sold at
public auction, to be held at the lo
cal landv office at Blackfoot, Idaho, on
the 26tfi inst., and the purchaser of j
such improvements will, under the
terms of the ratifying act, be granted
a preference right of entry for a
period of thirty days following the
opening on June 17 next. All lands
within the five-mile limit of the town
of Pocatello will be sold at public
auction to the highest bidder at not
less than $10 per acre, the sale to be
held at the local land office at Black
foot, Idaho, beginning July 17 next.
