METHODIST CHURCH, SOUTH
GENERAL CONFERENCE AS
SEMBLES FOR 14TH TIME.
There Are 282 Delegates In Attend
ance Representing a Membership
of 1,500,000.
-Dallas, Texas, May 7. The four
teenth general conference of the
Methodist Episcopal church, south,
convened In Dallas today. The open
ing exercises were conducted by
Bishop Wilson of Baltimore. The
roll call showed an attendance of 2S2
delegates representing forty-seven
annual conferences and missions
with . an aggregate membership ex
ceeding 1,500,000. Besides these dele
gates there were present the eleven
bishops of the church and a numbtr
of prominent delegates from foreign
lands, Including Mexico, Brazil, Chi
na and Japan. The conference is ex
pected to remain in session a month
or longer.
Besides attending 'lo routine busi
ness connected with the publishing
and other interests of the church,
there are several important matters
of special interest to come before
the conference. Foremost among
these questions is the proposition to
create the Order of Deaconesses in
the church. The order has proved a
success in the Methodist Episcopal
church and is likely to be established
by the conference. A matter that is
expected to provoke lively discussion
is the settlement of the publishing
house war claims. In 1862 the pub
lishing house at Nashville was taken
possession of by federal authorities
and used for military purposes until
the close of the war. For the dam
age done congress awarded the
church $300,000. It has been assert
ed that this money was obtained by
fraud and misrepresentation by the
agent of the church who piloted the
matter through congress and in view
of these assertions the proposition
has been made that the money should
be returned by the church. A major
ity insists, however, that as the claim
was just and proper the church
should not be made to suffer by the
act of an individual and that con
sequently the money should not be
returned. Whichever way the matter
is decided the debate is certainly tc
be an interesting one.
It is believed that at least two and
probably more bishops will be elect
ed at the present conference. A num
ber of names are mentioned and all
represent men of scholarship, piety,
ministerial ability and, in the general
opinion of the church, are most
prominent. The name most heard in
this connection is that of Rev. E. E.
Hoss, D. 1)., of Nashville, editor of
the Christian Advocate. Others
whose names are mentioned in con
nection with the honor are the Rev.
Gross Alexander, D. D., of Louisville
conference, the Rev. John J. Tigert,
editor of the Methodist Review; the
Rev. James Atkins, D. D., of South
Carolina; the Rev. P. H. Whisner, D.
D. of the Baltimore conference; the
Rev. Collins Denny, D. D., of Vander
bilt university; the Rev. J. D. Ham
mond, D. D., of the North Georgia
conference; the nev. W. E, Vaughn
D, D. of the Pacific conference and
the Rev. J. T. Sawyer, D. D., of the
Louisiana conference.
BAPTIST GATHER.
Forty-Seventh Session of the South
ern Baptist Convention.
Ashville, N. C, May 8. Whe South
ern Baptist convention convenes here
tomorrow and will continue in ses
sion for one week.
It will be the largest gathering of
representatives of this great denom
ination ever held in the south. Be
tween 1200 and 1500 delegates have
received credentials, and these will
represent a constituency of 1,632,540
members. Within the bounds of the
convention are 16,690 churches, 762
associations and 13,473 preachers. As
many preachers as can possibly do
so attend the annual meeting and
there are a great many lay delegates
and visitors. Among those already
on the field are large delegations
from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Forida, Virginia, the Carolinas, Ten
nessee. Kentucky, Alabama and
Georgia.
Although tho programme will be
largely confined to action on the re
ports of these three organizations of
thought it was shame tor her to play

the church, an important featuro of
the convention will be the selection
of a president to succeed ox-Govern
or Northen, who has declined to nl
low the use of his name as a candl
date for re-election. Tho contest
promises to be a spirited one between
the Baptists of tho east and thoso
of the west of the Mississippi. Tho
former probably will unito on Mon
Joshua Levering of Baltimore, as
their candidate, while the western
men most prominently mentioned
for the honor are ox-Governor J. P
Eagle of Arkansas and Hon. R. C
Bucker of Dallas.
