Like that of Janice Meredith, Its beauty . Lures men to make a mock and myth Of duty, 4) ww r a hirsrn Hnv Is bv nil odds this year In many parts of the country the cheapest food we can gtvelo stock and dairy cattle, says Dr. J. T. Wooster in American Cultivator. Good, bright hay, especial ly timothy, has enough nourishment in it to keep the animals doing well when supplemented with a fair amount of grain. How much grain will suffice for a good balanced ration? I have found that about half as much grain in weight ns good timothy hay pro duces most excellent results that is, to twenty pounds of hay ten pounds of grain of mixed variety will keep the anlmnls in fine condition. 1 should recommend about equal parts of wheat bran, corn and oat meal and either oil- meal or line gluten meal, whichever is the cheaper. This makes a balanced ration which nny one can mix nnd, by adapting it a little to the prices ruling for different foods, get economical re sults without in "any -way affecting the" health of the animals or the. yield of milk. Pea Vine Hay. A. S. M., Indiana county, Pa., writes to The National Stockman: "Cowpeas were a grand success with us last year in a small way. We planted one nnd one-quarter acres, plowing under the one-quarter acre by way of experiment and making the rest into hay, which we have just finished feeding. We never fed anything with more satisfac tion, tho stock eating everything up clean, wasting nothing." Our corre spondent's success in the latitude of Pittsburg is encouraging, says The Stockman. He has some land in good condition that he wishes to make still better and is thinking of growing peas upon it for seed. He can do this, plow ing the vines down after hand picking the pods and seeding to rye ns n cover crop for winter. But he should uaTe cheap labor picking the peas. CHEMISTRY OF TEARS, 'o Weeping Improve tUe Slfirlit Instead of WeakeuInK It. Tears have their functional duty to accomplish, like every other lluid of tho body, and tho lachrymal gland is not placed behind the eye simply to All space or to give expression to emo tion, says an exchange. The chemical properties of tears con sist of phosphate of lime and soda, making them very salty, but never bit ter. Their action on tho eye is very beneficial, and here consists their pre scribed duty of the body, washing tiior oughly that sensitive organ, whicli al lows no foreign fluid to do the samo work. Nothing cleanses the eyo like a good salty shower bath, and medical art has followed nature's Jaw in this respect, advocating the invigorating lolutlon for any distressed condition of the optics. Tears do not weaken the sight, but Improve it. They act as a tonic on the muscular vision, keeping the eye soft and limpid, and It will be noticed that womon In whose eyes sympathetic tears Tho homliest man in Pendleton, as well as the handsomest, and others, are invited to call on any druggist and get free a trial bottle of Kemp's Balsam for the throat and lungs, a remedy that is guaranteed to cure and relieve all chronic and acute coughs, asthma, bronchitis and consumption. " The savage fslaudcrs of the south Pacific believe that the world Is a cx coanut shell of enormous dimensions, at the top of which Is a single aperture communicating with tho upper air, where human beings dwell. At tho very bottom of this imaginary shell is n stem gradually tapering to a point which represents the beginning of all things. This point is n spirit or demon without human form, whoso name Is Root of All Existence. By him the en tire fabric of creation is sustained. Tn ho Inrorlnr of rli rnn'onnilt shell. at its very bottom, lives a female tie-" mon. So unrrow Is the space Into which she Is crowded that she Is oblig ed to sit forever with knee nnd chin touching. Her name is The Very Be ginning, and from her aro sprung nu merous spirits. They Inhnblt five dif ferent floors, Into which the great co coanut Is divided. From certain of these snlrlts mankind Is descended. The Islanders, regarding themselves as the only real men nnd women, were formerly accustomed to regard stran gers ns evil spirits In the guise of hu manity, whom they killed when they could, offering, them as sacrifices. The Growth of Seaweed. Seaweeds vary surprisingly In their habits of life. Somo snecles grow al together beneath tho wqter, attaching themselves below the lowest uuo icvei, other frequent heights where they aro left dry at every retreating tide, while others yet aro found in situations where-they nro scarcely ever covered by water. Whereas most of them at tach themselves to rocks or solid bot tom, keeping to the shallows, there are exceptions to tho rulo, among which tho most remarkable is tho sargasso or gulf weed, which floats on the surface of tho ocean. Immenso fields of it ure seen by the navigator, extend ing as far ub tho eye can reach. It is sometimes so abundant as seriously to interfere with tho progress of ships, and it was this which so alarmed tho crew of Columbus on his first voyngo of discovery.
