If the Facts Prove to the Contrary, It
Will Weaken Republican Ticket in
All Parts of the State What J. E.
Lathrop, Head of the Democratic
Publicity Bureau, Says.
Portland, May 2. The claim is
made, and persistently made, upon
the streets of Portland and through
out Western Oregon, that almost
everybody in Umatilla county is go
ing to vote for W. J. Furnish for
governor. At any rate, they are
claiming from 800 to 1000, and Judge
Ellis while in Portland the other day,
was quoted by the Oregonian as es
timating Furnish's majority in Uma
tilla county at 800. We are besieged
with inquiries as to the authenticity
of this report.
It appears to be a crucial point in
the present campaign as to whether
the republican candidate for gover
nor is going to sweep everything in
his own county and overshadow the
democratic organization, virtually
placing them in a position of making
a half-hearted fight against him. This
appears to be the manner in which
the campaign is being fought in this
part of the state, and there is no
doubt that if the people can be con
vinced that Mr. Furnish thus carries
Umatilla county in his vest pocket, it
will strengthen his standing west of
the Cascades from the Columbia
river to the California line. What
people are interested in down here
is the truth or falsity of this claim.
It is persistently put forth by Chair
man Jack Matthews and his cohorts,
and is discussed eagerly on all sides.
An accurate statement as to the
true conditions in Umatilla county
will throw light upon this question
If this claim be not true as here set
forth, it will have a decided effect.
What people want down here is the
real facts in the case. Is it true or
is it not true that everybody up there
is supporting .Mr. Furnish?
During the last few days estimates
have been made of Eastern Oregon,
and it is claimed here now by the
managers of the democratic cam
paign, that the democratic state tick
et will come down to Wasco county
with between 1000 and 1500 majority
for Chamberlain. This, it is believed
is an estimate based upon reliable
information by astute politicians who
understand the situation in their sev
eral localities.
As to Western Oregon, every day
brings reports that are more and
more encouraging. Western Oregon
will give him a large majority. It is
inBide information from the republi
can state committee, that they con
cede Western Oregon to Chamber
lain, but they are claiming Eastern
Oregon -for Furnish, and in that
claim they necessarily include Uma
tilla county by a big majority. They
therefore leave Multnomah county as
the battle ground to determine the
issue.
If we accept their own theory of
the campaign, we have them beaten
even if we concede, and we are wil
ling to, that Eastern Oregon will give
Mr. Furnish a majority; for, if Mult
nomah county be the battle ground
it is as certain that Chamberlain will
carry It as it is that the earth is a
uart of the solar system. The vote
in Multnomah county at the priiria
ries, showed 4900 for he regular re
publicans and 5214 for the Furnish
independents. There are 5000 to
7000 democrats in the county. These,
added to the regular republicans,
gives more than 10,000 votes, against
5200 for the Furnish ticket.
However, we are willing to con
cede the loss of one-third of the reg
ular republicans who will vote the
Furnish ticket, and still further to be
conservative, are willing to cut down
our estimate to 2000 for Chamberlain
in this county.
There are several elements that
make this estimate safe. Among the
5214 independents that supported
Furnish at the primaries were 1000
democrats who now are lined up sol
idly for Chamberlain. Furthermore,
there are many who supported Fur
bish as against Geer who are person
ally for Chamberlain. Consequently
inasmuch as the theory of the repub

the next governor of Oregon.

Large Bodies of Valuable Ore Being
Blocked Out.

have been resumed at the Golconda
mine with a forco of over 38 men.

day night, in honor of Miss Mablo
Harris, of Portland, who has spent
