When an artist has been identified
with one particular part In the le
gltimate or romantic drama in which
he defies comnetltlon or comparison
as In the case of Joseph Jefferson In
'"Rip Van Winkle," Imitators spring
up unsummoned and without proper
qualifications. Lewis Morrison's re
turn to the stage with a splendid new
production of "Faust" is- another
lustration of this fact. Two years
ago he retired and imitators sprang
up like mushrooms, believing a proa
table field open. The public can't be
fooled all the time. They wanted the
real devil, Lewis Morrison, and they
are getting him this season with the
most elaborate scenic, mechanical
and electrical production of "Faust'
ever staged in this country. Tho
name and fame of Lewis Morrison
has drawn a succession of crowded
houses in every city he has so far
visited, his auditors have voiced their
approval In tumultuous fashion and
the tour of Lewis Morrison himself
in the part of Mephisto bids fair to
be the biggest financial theatrical
success of the season. In cities
where a succession of small audi
ences have caused depletion of the
local manager's reserve fund, Lewis
Morrison's artistic performance of
"Faust" and the beauty of his new
production has been magnetic
enough to draw crowds which neces
sltated the display of that long un
used sign, "standing room only,'
which will on Tuesday, May 6th
probably be visible at the Frazer
opera house, when Lewis Morrison
himself will play Mephisto, support
ed by tho best company he has ever
had.
Corn in Umatilla.
The Spokesman-Review correspon
dent sent his paper the following:
Corn planting will begin inside of
wo weeks and some of the Athena
corn growers are already marking
out the rows. This is one of the few
corn growing sections In Eastern Or
egon, and the acreage is increasing
steadily year by year. This year will
show quite an advancement over last
and the result will be more hogs and
more diversified farming. Corn was
a good crop last year and the portion
or It fed to hogs Is said by the farm
ers who tried it to have produced
good results. The feasibility of in
troducing silos and feeding ensilage
not only to hogs, but to stall cattle,
is being discussed to some extent.
and a few ranchers think that will
be one of the future industries of this
section. All admit it would probably
oe a paying proposition.
