Assessor Will Assess It and Thereby Add to Revenue of County and State Escaped Taxation in Past Years. Walla Walla, April 28. An attempt to evade taxation on about 2,000,000 bushels of wheat In this county has been discovered by .Assessor Cadman and an effort is being made to prevent the consummation of the plan, with prospects that the law will have to be called in to assist the officers in list ing the property. The field workers have turned in re ports of wheat on hand as given In, showing but little grain in the county Reports from grain buyers and ware house men indicate that fully 2,000, 000 bushels in excess of the amount listed was actually in the warehouses on March 1. But the owners refused to list the grain as "did the warehouse mpn. This nlan has been successfully operated in the past it seems, and no official has been able or inclined tc stop it. In this way a large revenue has been lost to the county and state. Assessor Cadman took the matter up quietly and sent a private repre sentative to everv warehouse in the county, after his regular men had been refused admittance to several or; the warehouses in which it was known grain was stored. This man listed all the grain he could in a memorandum book, and made an estimate of the amount of grain in each house. Then he would go to some of the men who has grain In the house and tell them what he had found. In some cases the grain was listed for taxation with out another word. But one case was more serious than others. At Prescott is a large warehouse managed by a company of flouring mill men or fortianu. nere the assessor found a locked door and "no admittance" sign when he tried tn finri lmw munh crain was on ham and who owned it. Repeated efforts to secure admittance resulted fruit less. Then Assessor Cadman took tin matter up with the attorney-general of the state, and has begun proceed ings by giving notice to tne warenouse manager to open his doors or legal process will be secured to force the listing of the grain. Wheat has been assessed tins year at R0 rents a bushel, and a heavy loss of revenue will result if the grain which is being kept from the assessor is not found and placed with other property on tho tax -rolls. It is said that the same methods of covering up grain and other property exists in Whitman and other Eastern Washington counties, decreasing the assessed valuation of each county largely. Assessor Oadman states that he hopes to raise the assessed valua tion of this county about $5,000,000 this year over that of last year, and pne-flfth of tho amount will come from wheat alone. Other property especially money and bank stock, will be looked after closely, and a list of mortgages recorded In the county will ho liHPrt ns a basis uon which to fix the assessment of several men in the loaning business who have evaded a large part of their taxesjn the past, It Is estimated that fully 3,000,000 linariPia of craln was on hand March 1 In this county and the statements of the banks of this city snow auoui J2.000.000 on deposit at that .time, T,t vonr lmt S100.000 In cash was found for assessment, and but a small fraction of the grain then on nana. The case promises to aeveiop imw estlng features. In Need of Money. All nartiea knowlne themselves In- rinhtrri to D. Kemler are hereby noti fied to call and settle at once and save costs. D. KEMLER.
