ST. PETER'S IM ROME.
It Tnkc Many Visits to neallse Its
Vnstncna and Splendor.
It is curious to watch the faces of
people as they enter the great doors of
SL Peter's at Rome and push back tho
heavy leathern curtains that keep out
the noise and the air ami find them
selves in the presence of the most im
pressive spectacle on earth, as Byron
said:
Majesty,
Power, glory, strength and beauty all are
aisled
In this eternal ark of worship,
It is easy to detect those who have
never been there before nnd those who
have become accustomed to its mag
nitude and gorgeousness. It requires
several visits to adjust the vision and
the mind to its colossal proportions
end brilliant decorations and enable
them to realize the vastness and tho
beauty of the scene. The more fre
quently you visit St Peter's cathedral
tho greater and tho moro beautiful it
becomes, nnd after a time you are en
abled to drink in with complete satis
faction tho fullness of its area, its al
titude and its magnificence.
' The cost of tho building up to date
.has been more than .$55,000,000, .nnd
the annual expense of- maintaining it
is about $35,000. An architect and a

. A student of natural history had been
in the habit o? Immersing' for preserva
tion his different specimens of spiders
and ants in bottles of alcohol. He saw'
that they struggled for a few minutes,
but he thought tjiat sensation was soon
extinguished and that tboy were soon
free from suffering.
On one occasion he wished to pre
serve a. large female spider and twenty-four
of her young ones that ho had
captured. He put the mother into a
bottle of alcohol and saw that after a
few moments she folded up her legs
nno'n'her bodv and was at rest, no
then put into the bottle the young ones.
who, of course, manifested acute pain.
What was his surprise to see the
mother arouse herself from her lethar
gy, dart around nnd gather her young
4ncs to her bosom, fold her legs over
them, again relapse into insensibility
Until at last death came to her relief
and the limbs, uo longer controlled by
this maternal instinct, released their
grasp and became dead! He has never
since repeated tho experiment, but has
applied chloroform before Immersion.
