being the case, the traveler will go

of them ever find Pendleton, or learn
of the advantages for a man of push
that the country hereabouts afford.,
People Rushing In.
On last night's train were 61 peo
ple from the different states of the
East, going to Spokane. These com
posed people of all classes, from the
man with money looking for a home
and advantages that are not afforded
in the thickly settled East, to men
who could just barely scrape money
enough together to get their tickets,
and will land at their destination
without money or friends. Some of
the latter class have large families
and they will not find money hang
ing on the bushes for them to provide
those depending upon- them with food j
and clothing. They will all be able
to find work in the different parts
of the country, but may not find as
easy a row to hoe as they imagined
when they left their homes.
Train No. 1, which was due here at
8 o'clock this morning, did not ar
rive until almost 1 this afternoon, the
delay being caused by the homeseek
ers, it waiting for the extra sections
of immigrant trains loaded with East
erners. Something like 100 people
woro on this train, and hero they
changed cars for Spokane, and went
out. on No. 8, which waited for No. 1.
Will Continue to Come.
They will continue to cpmp for
sometime. The homescckcrs rates
will last over tho transcontinental
lines until the end of this month, and
as long as they Inst thero will bo a
great westward rush. In speaking of
the people leaving St. Paul, a dis
patch from that place dated tho 16th,
says:
Two trains Inst night, two this
morning and two tonight on each of
tho three coast lines were nocessary
to take care of the homescokers' trav
el this week. It was the largest yet
this year, including passongers and
effects. Of this number 1700 went
to Manitoba via tho Soo line, 1000
went to North Dakota and northern
Minnesota, and about 2300 woro des
tined for the far West.
In all this movement there was
scarcely a foreigner to be seen. Two
hundred were from Wisconsin and
are bound for Washington to take up
timber land for lumbering purposes.
Quite a number were attracted by
tho new gold discoveries at Thundor
Mountain. To the latter point there
is likely to bo a rush never before
equaled In any mining stampedo in
the West since tho days of Deadwood
and Lendvillo discoveries.
The Grent Northern is overwhelm
ed with inauiries concerning the fa
cilities for reaching this locality, and
is getting out printed matter describ
ing the route.

STROKE OF PARALYSIS.

en While Talking With Friends.
Captain William Miles, commonly
called "Paddy" Miles, a well-known
character nround town and an old wnr
veteran Is in a critical condltton from
tho effects of a stroke ot paralysis.
Thursday afternoon ho was on tho
streets in his usual health and about
6 o'clock ho walked Into John
Schmidt's saloon, whore a lot of his
friends were at .the bar taking a
drink. Tho bartender naked "Paddy"
to have a glass of elder, at tho samo
time setting out a glass of orango ci
der. "Paddy" drank tho contents of
tho glass and wbb conversing with
his friends, when ho suddenly began
to reel. Ho walks with a enno nnd
this fell from his hnnd nnd ho wns
only prevented from falling by C. D.
Drake, who wnfl standing by. "Pad
dy" wns then tnken to a chair and a
cab called, which took him to his
room on Kast Railroad street. Dr.
C. J. Smith wns called nnd found that
the stroko had only nffoctcd tho right
side and while ho Is still In a criti
cal condition ho Is not suffering, and
tho doctor thinks that ho may recov
er, although, owing to his advanced
ago, ho is In a most serious condition.
