THE SITUATION HOPEFUL
The Press Reviews the Ticket in
This County Nominated by the
Democrats.
The delegates assembled in the
county convention Saturday elected
one of the strongest tickets tr- it have
been put before the people of the
county tor years. Special attention
seems to have been given to the legis
lative part of the ticket, though the
strength of the men for t!.o county
offices was not overlooked and the
'result is an evenly balanced ticket
has been presented to the voter.
From top to bottom the ticket is one
that will appeal strongly to the voter
at the June election.
Dr. C. J. Smith, of Pendleton, who
heads the ticket for state senator,
Is a man who is well known the coup
ty over, is popular with democrats
and republicans alike and is known
to be "a man of sterling worth arid
firm in political convictions. In the
opinion of the Press, no better man
could have been selected. Blakley
and Reser could hardly be improved
on for representatives. Taylor for
sheriff, Chamberlain for clerk and
Marsh for recorder will be able to
take care of themselves, 'and a wise
moye was made In the selection of
Hansford for treasurer. Milton was
not overlooked, and in addition to
one representative, Strain, for a3ses
sor appears on the democratic tick
et The surveyor and coroner came
from Pendleton, and both are men of
worth. The county platform embod
ies much that is good and though it
touches on some points foreign to
county issues and contains more
than is absolutely necessary, it will
be carefully read and stored in mem
ory. It is conceded by all democrats that
Chamberlain will head the state tick
et for governor. Like his opponent
on the republican ticket he is a self
made man. He counts his friends
and supporters in both parties. He
is a democrat and has been a demo
crat all his life, and should the state
convention name others of his kind
for office, the democrats have their
first and best chance for years to suc
ceed at the polls. The factional strife
in the republican ranks of this state
has for years blocked needed legisla
tion. The masses have become heart
sick and weary of the methods prac
ticed and see no hope for anything
better by a change of ownership of
the republican political machine.
SCOTT FOR SENATOR.
Portland Editor Logical Candidate,
Says Baker City Herald.
Baker City, April 7. The Herald
says editorially:
, HomWj'H. Scott,. the' brainy editor
of Hhev Portland Oregonian, would ac
cept the senatorial toga if it were
thrown over his shoulders' by respect
ful hands.
Sta te Senator Charley ".-'Fulton, of
Clatsop county, has a following of
admirers who believe he would adorn
the upper house of our national con
gress. Sol Hirsch, of Portland, is mention
ed by his many friends as a man who
would lend dignity to the "most dis
tinguished governing body of the
world," " ' 4
And now comes the announcement
that Governor T. T. Geer has shied
his castor into the ring apd will ap
pear before the state legislature as a
candidate for his 'erstwhile partner's,
Simon's job. When the people of Ma
rion county heard that the Tall Fir's
name had not been presented to the
state convention for renominatlon,
much dissatisfaction was expressed
by the stalwarts of the party in the
webfoot valley; but when the further
tidings came that Geer .would recruit
his stampeding forces and stand for
the United States senatorship, there
were grins of pleasure on the faces of
the Marlon countyltes. As governor,
Geer has made a great many bad
breaks, As United States senator,
there is a possibility that he will
make others.
The logical candidate, according to
the concensus of competent opinion,
is Harvey Scott, of the Oregonian.
Scott holds the Multnomah county
legislative delegation, since the de-

feat of the Simon clique, in the hol

support of Multnomah county to Wil
liamson and Furnish at the state con
vention. While there is no suspicion
of trades attached to the move, there
is reason to believe that in consider
ation of the kindness, Scott will go to
the United States senate.
Speaking broadly, the whole state
of Oregon could produce no more su

will be, and no powre in politics can
prevent him. But Scott is silent, and

GAME WARDENS CO-OPERATE.
Wells and Morse will Work Together
This Year-
Active steps are being taken, says
the Walla Walla Statesman,- by the
game wardens of Umatiila county in
conjunction with Game Warden
Morse to eradicate the ovij and vio
lation of the law in constructing fish
dams in the Walla Walla river nnd
adjacent streams. Several such
dams in the Walla Walla and Turn
a lum and branches were called to
the attention of the wardens of this
county and Umatilla county, result
ing in Deputy Warden T. B. Wells
making a visit to these streams and
destroying the dams. The game
wardens of the two counties are
working in harmony in this matter
and in all other matters as far as
possible to prevent any and all vlo
latlons of the game arid fish laws.

George Peebler has about given up
tho Idea of starting a creamery on his

"I have looked Into the-matter

cluded that thero would bo good

In a business-like way, but I havo al

fit In cream, Tho onions aro vory
thick in tho neighborhood of my

thing to get green In tho spring. Tho
cows relish them and tho milk thoy
give during this time Is so strong
thnt one can hnrdly stnnd to milk
them at all. If It wore not for UiIb,
I would go ahead to carry my plana
for a creamery Into execution, but
under tho circumstances I havo como
to the conclusion thnt It will not
