TRIALS OF A POSTMASTER. Letter of a Pilot Rock Man to the . Waitsburg Official. There is a man living at Pilot Rock who wants to find a family, who he says, lives In the neighborhood of Waitsburg, In Walla Walla county, and this Is the kind of a letter he wrote the Waitsburg postmaster ask lng him to help to locate them: Dear Sir: Would you be so kind as to informe me of a family who beliqve are living about nine miles from Waitsburg. Their Is a telephone running from Waitsburg to their That Is all the description I can give of them, except that the man is mar ried and "has stock' on his place, Please oblige yours truly. "P. S. He is an Illinois man, and I think his wife's sister is living with them. I think he has some sheep. His wife's brother went to them a month ago." "These," said Mr. Dickinson plain tively today, "are some of the trials of a postmaster." . He has forgotten the name and wrote A. S. Dickinson, Waitsburg postmaster the above description, thinking that from it he would be able to pick out the right man from the many patrons of his postoffice The letter is so clear in its descrip tion that Mr. Dickinson thinks he will have no trouble in finding the lost friend for the Oregon man and as soon as he Is located the fact will be wired to Pilot Rock at once. The Snoquallmie Falls plant has been made the subject of some inter esting experiments. The transmis" sion lines to Seattle and Tacoma. which are double, were so connected that the current passed from the falls to Seattle, back to the falls, to Ta coma and then back to the falls again, making a total distance of 153 miles. The line was found to have a resistance of 241 ohms, and the re sistance of the insulation from the wire to the ground was 7,000 ohms. One of the 1500 KW. generators fur nishes the qurrent sent over tihs cir cuit, and a similar machine was used as a synchronous motor at the re ceiving end. It was found possible to transmit a large amount of energy in this way with a loss of approximately only 13 per cent. Tests made on an open circuit to determine the charging current showed that the lat ter required in the generators a capa city of 112 KW. Geo. H. Gibson, in the Engineering Magazine for April. Too Much Drink. As a result of too much "booze," four men were up before Police Judge McCourt this morning. They all pleaded guilty, and one, Ed Whittier, who claimed to be a sheep herder, from Heppner, was released. Robert Morrow, a carpenter, who has been begging on the streets, and drunk, was sent to iall until his story of having work with the O. R. & N. com pany could be Investigated, aid his chum, A. E. Dickson, was sent to jail for two dajs and a half in default of the money to pay a fine of $5. The other man was an Indian. He said his name was Dan Hadley and he was fined $5 and costs, amounting to $7.50 and went to jail In default. MAZAMAS AT MT. ADAMS. They Will Leave Portland on July 15 for White Salmon. Conforming with the wishes of the majority, the ninth annual outing of the Mafcamas will be made to Mount Adams, Washington. Leaving Port land for White Salmon on the morn ing of July 15, 1902, the following day to Trout- Lake where permanent quarters will be established during the stay, which will be from the 15th to the 26th of July. A unique tribute was paid to the memory of John P. Altgeld at today's session of the allied parties convention. After resolutions of regret were adopted, the convention arose and remained tanding in silence for 30 seconds.
