When Benjamin Franklin first
thought of starting a newspaper in
Philadelphia many of his frionds ad
vised against it because there was a
paper published in Boston. Some of
them doubted that the country would
be able to support two newspapers,
says the Chicago Record-Herald.
From the last count it appenrs that
20,879 newspapers and periodicals are
now published in the United States.
Of this number 2,158, or more than
ten per cent., are daily papers, 14,827
are weeklies, 2,701 are monthlies and
175 are quarterlies. Smaller numbers
have other publication periods.
Canada has a total of 930 publica
tions, of whi 110 nre dailies, 043
weeklies and 111 monthlies. Cuba has
27, of which 11 are dailies. The Ha
waiian islands are credited, with 23,
of which live are daily publications,
ten nre weeklies. The Philippine is
lands have four dailies and the Island
of Porto Rico three. New York has
the largest number of publications
among the states and Nevnda the
smallest, the former supporting 1,930
and the latter only 30. Illinois, with
smaller population than either
Pennsylvania or the Philippines, has
many more newspapers than both to
gether. Alaska has the largest terri
tory among the states and territories,
but it has next to, the smallest num
ber of publications, being next to the
Philippines, which are the lowest on
the list.

Reindeer have been the real heroes'
of the most thrilling enterprises in
the history of Alaska. Oiie was the
:arrying of relief supplies to the
destitute miners in the Yukon val
ley when untold hardships and pri
vations were endured in driving across
an unknown wilderness without roads
or trails or guides. The reindeer were
frequently stampeded by wolves and
mountain Hons, but in the end they
accomplished a journey which could
not possibly have been made with
either dogs or horses, In conjunction
with the revenue cuter Bear which
vessel, by the way, has been employed
more extensively than any other in
tho transportation of reindeer 300
deer carried supplies in the famous
relief expedition to the whalers im
prisoned in the ice near Point Bar-
row. In this case the overland jour
ney exceeded 1,500 miles in length.

Advertising Is tho Hfo blood of tho

tho prospective Industry will follow
the rays of tho searchlight of public
