many feet below the first one, from
which he took out $15,000 in one day.
One pan of earth alone washed out
$600 in gold.
Miss Lotta Greenup, of Paducah,
Ky., has taken to the stump with her
father in his campaign for the demo
cratic nomination for member of con
. gress from this district. Mr. Greenup
is a music dealer, and Miss Lotta is
an accomplished musician. During
her father's tours of the district she
plays the violin and sings before the
audiences which he addresses.

Knocked Him Down Wih
Stone.
Thursday evening " someone
"Policeman Fee on the right leg, just
below the knee, with a stone and he
is now compelled, to use a cane to aid
him in getting about. A part of Po
liceman Fee's duties are to meet the
trains that come in at the O. R. &
N. depot and look out for hobos.
Thursday evening he went down to
meet the east and west-bound trains
and was walking around the car look
ing for someone whom he might de
vour, when he was suddenly knocked
down by a blow on the calf of the leg
with a good sized stone, which had
been hurled at him presumably by a
hobo, but the fellow who did it got
out of sight and has not been caught,
The bruise is not serious but is quite
painful.

Joseph H. Perkins, a well known
citizen of Cottage Grove, .Lake county,
died Wednesday night of pneumonia.
R. S. Pague, formerly the head of
the weather bureau in Portland, is
now in the weather service at
Charleston, S. C.
Joseph Clarke, who was recently ar
rested in Albany for stealing an over
coat in. a hotel at Eugene, was tried
in the telrcuit court and found guilty.
He was sentenced to two years in
the penitentiary.
The Yakima Commercial Club has
adopted a resolution asking the sec
retary of the interior to close Banler
forest reserve to stock after this year.
Tho matter was brought to the atten
tion of the club by the Yakima Hus
bandry Association, which is compos
ed of farmers and cattlemen.
William Phillips, of Clackamas, a
pioneer of 1840, has written a poem
entitled "Crossing the Plains in '40,"
which he has published in a booklet
and will mall to the address of any
pioneer who crossed tho plains by ox
team, on receipt of name, address and
one cent for postage.
A party of prospectors reached
Welser, Idaho, Wednesday, after a
terrible. 14-duys' Journey through tho
snow from Thunder-Mountain district'
bearing with them the' bodies of J. S.
Campbell and W. P. Skytea, who were
killed In a snow slide en route to
Thunder Mountain via tho Warrens '
trail, February 10. The bodies, frozen
and draped In hides, were dragged
over tho snow. '
Levi W. SCnmwalt, who died at Wa
mic, Or.. Fohruary 27, was an Oregon
pioneer of 1850. Ho was born in
Missouri February 15, 1829. When 21 ,
years of age ho came to Western. Ore
gon. Ho was married to MIS3 "Mary
Zutmvalt, of Polk county, in April,
18G1. In 18G4 tho family moved to
Wasco county, and has resided there
since, A wife and Ave children sur

The Time Has Been Mostly Taken Up
In Auditing Bills.
County court has been In session
chice Wednesday morning, with Judge
G. A. Hnrtman presiding and T. P.
GlllUand and Horace Walker, county
commissioners, assisting In going
over, auditing, and allowing the bills
against tho county and transacting
such other business that comes before
the court, for its attention. The work
