County Supervisors Will Confer Talk
of Crushed Rock In Washington.
Walla Wtalla. Jan. 13 -Tin question
nt good roads base taken a new hold
upon tlie people of Walla Walla coun
ty and concerted action looking to a
permanent lietterment of public high
ways Is about ti be made The coun
t commissioners have called a-meet
Ing of all the road supervisors of tin
1 iunt at tin court house February t.
to consider the question of perma
nent Improvement The meeting has
been made a part of the business of
supervisors by the board makliiK an
allowance of $L.'..re for each member
roadmaker present It Is expected
that ever? supervisor will be present
The plan Is to have a number of
practical papers upon road Improve
ments. and one or two addresses will
be made by practical road builders
All the various matters pertaining to
roads and bridges will be considered
Straw Day's Good Effect.
Last summer an innovation in tin
way ol Straw Dai was introduced
when tanners turned out and littered
straw Orel the roads to prevent tin
disagreeable dust which rise, in hot
weathei in the light soil section of
the country. The experiment proved
successful 111 u wav. and tended to
show what could be done In I COS
ci rted movement for betttei public
highways In some places tin mads
arc much better this winter thai SVai
known, on account of the amount 01
.-traw which I inn mixed with the
soil from the experiment of ",tniv
day."
An important niattf i to In consid
ered by the county convention will be,
the proposition to use convicts in the
work of road improvement ,t the
present time. It is not possible to
work all the men onfiui d at the state
penitentiary about the grounds to ad
vantai'c un, the suggestion has been
made that a uumlier be employed by
the county in doing work on the roads
leading from this city It Is propos
ed to crush rock and have it scattter
ei: u er the low place. In the depth ,,
several inches, making a permanent
roadbed at a fair expense. It is sard
I bat the rock can be crushed by con
vu-ts and delivered on the cars at
cross roads very cheaply, as the rail
mad loninales have off. ,. , to haul
the rock nr H nominal cost to the
county.
Another Straw Day Coming.
One pi. in likely to be adopted by
tin- supervisors is u general straw
day in the spring, when an effort will
in made to Interest everyone in the
matter An old fashioned "bee' is be
ing considered, when a sumptuous
lunch will be served and farmers will
In aski d to tut B out in a bod) and
haul straw over as much roadway a
possible In this way it is said. iini'h
of the highways leading to this cltj
can be placed In good condition I'm
II summer's travel.
In Columbia county a plan is now
Oil foot to place crushed rock on sev
eral miles uf roadway this summer
A rock ciusher has been purchased
jointly b) the city of Dayton ami To
iiimhia county, aud the machine will
in used during the coming months to
test the rock process of making pc i
mauent roads. So far in this county
