Has Hopes That He Will Win the
Nomination From the Republican
Convention.
Pendleton. January 10 To the Ed
Ito political article which was
this ue.l reprinted In your colums,
'rr,n the Baker City Herald, con
tained the statement that "Stephen
A I owcll ot Pendleton, has not an
nou-iced the decease of his political
aspirations, hut It Is understood he
stands ready to do so."
The article as it appeared in the
Bakci ( 'It v Herald was so manifestly
1 a paid advertisement of the Candida
cy ot mv local opponent that I did
not deeni It worthy my attention, but
Its appearance In n paper published
in the city of my home gives II such
standing that it may lie misleading.
Permit m therefore, to say that
my candidacy will continue until a
I'overnor Is nominated by the republi
can convention and that I expect to
win My hope of success has been at
all times with the plain people, not
with the politicians.
