There are plans for enlargement ol 'he spore- of their work in the future, hut for the present it is thought wise to permit them to re main in the existing status. Some lay, a full Hedged high school will lie the hoast of the town. According to a law passed tv the legislature of 1H01. there is a technical point to lie covered in an election by the property owning voters of the dis trict. No. lti, anil in pursuance there with the school board will ask the dis trict voter tomorrow to go to the court house and cast their ballot for the fol lowing proposition: "For establisihng grades above the eighth grade in srhool district No. Iri, I' mat i i la county, Oregon." It should tie understood that no changes are p moused. The schools will remain as at present constituted The law merely demands that the vot ers endorse the action of the hoard in establishing the grades above the eighth, and this is to be don tomor row at tbe election that has been called. The laws enacted last winter ma ie many changes in the legal require ments pertaining to the management nf the schools of the state. It was a comprehensive statute, and the elec tion that lias lieen called is hut one of the features of it. The grades above the eighth have been maintained tor several years, and there is no MM that some time in the not distant fu ture the voter will be asked to en dorse furher extension in the local svstem. to feel the loss of hi cook. WOOD CHOPPERS SCARCE Scarcity of Laborers Raises Price of Wood to $5.75. Mayur r. W. Vincent in oouipany with fiupt. O'Brien of tbe O. R. A N. took a trip to Huron yesterday. I'm mayor said today that there is a scar OIU of wood choppers in that counts and the price of wood is baing raised according! v. Wood is go. 76 par cord now which is 26c wore than the price of a ton of coal. Mayor Vincent pre diets that within a yaar if tbe preaeut situat ion continues com wtll take the place oi wood in the city of Peudletou. Another circumstance that affocts the value of wood in this particular vlciu ity is that the railroad rates on wood are the same Iron, the niue mountain to Walla Walla as they are to Pontile ton. This increases tbe quantity shipped to Walla Walla, aud unfavor ably affects tbe price as looked at from the standpoint of tbe Pendleton cuusumer. rlupl. O'brieu left his private car in the yards here and he aud Mayor Vin cent made tbe trip to Huron ou the ca boose of a aravel train. They were delayed three hours ou the way and alsiut lunch time, air.
