REGARDING THE CITY WATER
NO TYPHOID i. miss ARR TO BR FOUND
THEREIN.
Ordinary Flltsrt Rsmov IrapsHtlot
Dsath Rats It Low at Compared
With Othsr Towns.
A day or two ago a gentleman came
here from Portland and attended to
mutter, pertain, I. to hi. property in
terests. He met many cit iten., ' and
conversed upon the conditions here af
fecting hn.iness.health and the future.
One thing wa. told him that appear,
to have no foundation in tact that the
water of the citv .v.tetn is impregnat
ed with typhoid bacilli, and that citi
sens are compelled to turn to the nse
of sell water in order to preserve
health a. relating to fevers.
The East Oregonian caused inquirv
to be made and And. that these asser
tions are not doing justice to the citv
water system. As a matter ol fact ,
there are in the water coming from
the city mains no typhoid bacilli, and
it has not come to the attention ol the
city health officer, Dr. W. Q, Cole,
that any cases have developed this
Hiiimner of typhoid that are traceable
to the city water.
It i. true that some tendeucv faVkMl
to aquire miasmatic or malarial fevers,
hut the tendency i. not strongly mark
ed, and is le.. than that in most other
towns.
Filters of ordinary construction re
move all deleterious substances. Ami,
in these days of scientific mvestigstion
and the application of the fruit.- ol the
scientists' labors to the economy of
the household, it is not unreasonable
to expect people who desire perfect
protection to health to tit 1 1 lag filters.
Tin v sre not expensive, imr . their use
the cau.e of the slightest expense, af
ter purchase.
A Comparison Instltutod.
Without going into wearying details,
a cnmparison between Pendleton ami
ther towns of the country shows that
this is a very healthy place in which
to live. The death rate here is 11.8 in
he thousand per annum, hut HfbtljP
more than 10 per thousand, mid close
Q the I, .west averages established h
the most careful investigation through
out the Tinted States. In New York,
where latest scientific knowledge ha.
been applied the annual mortality rate
per 1IKK) of population is 13, or l.o
hiifher than that of this town.
I'r. Cole has made such a report to
the surgeon general of sthe United
States recently, and has in so doing
had occasion to give some attention to
the matter under consideration.
Question at to Weill.
At to tbe ote of well water, it has
been the opinion of most of the Pen
dleton physicians that the city water
is purer than that coming from well,
here. A a matter ol necessity, wells
take their supply from portions of the
town', substratum at point, to the west
from where more or less tilth has ac
cumulated upon tbe surface ami ha.
therefore found its way down into the
oil. So that the well water is
much more likely so to be impregnat
ed than is the water from the mains.
An exception to tbi. might be and
probably is found in tbe case of tbe
resident in the extreme eastern part of
Pendleton, inasmuch as above there
.ire no residence, and consequently no
surface accumulations to work their
way down into tne soil.
In Othsr Parts of Town.
But, a. I1' portions of the town lower
down to tbe west, there can be hut lit
tle question. It will lie conceded by
all who have given the matter intelli
gent attention, that well water in all
but the extreme euttern edge of the
town will more probably contain dis
ease germ, than that OOftaUfeJ from the
city mam..
The question i important. It affect,
public health, and, improperly told
to risitors and intending investors, in
jury i. done to Pendleton. It iboold
not be necessary to cautiou the people
against misrepresenting such condi
tions to men coming here lor the pur
u,ihe of invetigating the town's sta
tus. Bad water is very bad. Ami it
frightens most people, especially those
who have families.
