A teloKram printexl in the Kast Ore.
on Vmtn.w.iwy announced that
William C. Whitney has rAtirtsI per
manmitly from politice. Mr. Whitney,
himself anthonxsxl the announcement.
Many u democrat will regret to learn
this. Mr. Whitney has been one (
the cleanest, moat patriotic of all Ibf
American gentlemen who ha irniileil
the national policies of parties in Un
united Htatee. He ia a man Ol wealth
and yet in many reapecto was in close
touch with the common people. How
ever he may have devitted Irom the
political pathway traveled by the ma
jority of democrats, he has stood for
sincerity of advocacy and Kllantry of
action. He was a brave, chivalrous
lighter, resourceful and lacile in the
arts of the prsfeaiion of public policies.
His retirement will revive the mem
ory of the alleged apostasy of BUflf
Cleveland from the course of action
the latter promised prior H the demo
cratic convention in Chicago in 189:.',
when faithfulness on the pari of IsM
"atuffed prophet" would have saved
the national democratic organisation
from the later wrecking and disasters.
Mho Cleveland, as he pledged to Whit
ney, kept faith with the bimetal ists
at that time, in all probability the
party would have been strong enough
today to control the nation's affairs.
But Cleveland bowed down and wor
shipped he concentrated influence
wielded by the few wealthier classes,
disregarding the interests of the great
American people. Whitney became
diaguatad with his party's oourae, and
never again had the heart to continue
the tight as he had theretofore waged it.
To lose such a gallant soldier ia a
loaa for any army, and the democratic
hoata will be compelled to go onwaro
with one leader leas who stood for the
best methods and the highest ideal
FOOLS AND UUNS.
The annual crop from the sowing of
fools is now being gathered in the
form of funerals of person m killed In
guns that the owners didn't know were
loaded and others carelessly discharged
by men anil boys incompetent to hand-
die. It ia unusually large this year,
perhaps more prolific than that of any
previous season. Doarn in the Willa
mette valley where crops are nut ordi
narily as good of late years as in the
richer Kastern Oregon ami Washing
ton, the fool crop is remarkably
abundant. But in this part of the
world the tiarveat ia sufficient I v great.
The (acts relating to accidents witl
guns are recorded merely as of passing
intereat, not becauae the record will
have any deterrent effect on the loolsRil
persons who keep on year after year
killing off themselves and their fel
lows. About ao much human blood
must be sued each cycle of the sun,
anywav, and the sheddiug oi lbs!
Stood will urobablv go on ao long M
the race exists.
A ORIAT OPPORTUNITY.
1 and Clark commission in very large
part will Is- to advertise this state in
1 the east. They must make known the
pleasure- to he enjoyed in viewing
I beautiful anil grand sceneries, thrifty
town and majestic rivers : the immun
ity from dangers of all kinds excepting
those incident to ordinary travel and
the opportunities awaiting the man
who conies here determined to carve
out a prosperity for himself.
Oregon is in the situation of a mer
chant who has desirable goods and
who needs only to make his wares
known to command patronage.
"Oregon needs more people" was the
pertinent remark of Oovernor deer re
cently, and if the Lewis and Clark
commissioners properlv advertise the
centennial many of the needed people
will ls induced to come to the state.
The opportunity presents itself. It
remains with the i itniision to grasp
it. A great duty rests upon them.
Their action will determine the degree
of activity in Oregon that will follow
the great exposition.
WASTING THRIR I'KR Ft) M K ON DKSKRT
AIR.
It Ml amusing to read the free ad
vice given by soup' of the "lesser" re
publican paers ot Oregon to the new
chairman of the democratic slate cen
tral committee, the Hon. Sam White.
From the eager manner of these soli
citous friends, it would appear that a
great crisis has lieen reached in the de
mocraoy of Oregon, and that extra wis
dom, wiler executive ahilitv and more
profound thought are needed for the
hour, ami having a surplus of these
blessed virtues left over, alter per
fecting t he repuhl lean mamigenienl in
Oregon, t tie kiuder-iiearted among the
republican papers, have proffered the
free uae of these sacred republican at
tributes lor the emergency. Their
charitv ih only exceeded hv their oh
acurity. It is a calamity tor the state
that such perfume in watted on the

of the statements tiled in the assessor's
office and these are some of its mucin :
sions.
"A great manfacturer who live." in
one of the largest honee. in the city
and on one of the most fashionable
street thinks that all that lie has in
the way of horses, carriages, Jewelry,
household furniture, hooks, pictures,
etc., is worth no more than $410.
"A leading broker, reported to be
worth a qnarter of a million, thinks
his possessions ought not to he taxed
to a greater extent than KW.LM.
f "A leading hanker who lives antler
nnslv in a large house which is filled
with beautiful and valuable things,
and whose family diamonds are noted,
finds that he is worth in all ahnnt
MOO."
The l'ress-l'ost calls attention to
what is conceded to he a growing evil
in all parts ol the country the evil of
misstatement in returning properly
for taxation. That newspaper says:
"It is evident that our high tax rate
of nearly :i per cent is the result ol the
grossest Iraud and perjury committed
every year by nil classes of parsons,
am) especially by those who ought, on
account ol their success or fortunate
condition in life, to he perfectly wil
ling to bear at least their lull share of
the burdens ol maintaining thcuov
eminent. "
W
There are many men who (TOO 1 1
not make a misstatement under
oath concerning ordinary things of
life who do not hesitate to make mis
statements MOROTDtOI the property

oiimiunilv in the United States suf-
ers because iimnv of its cititens have
(alien into the bad habit of making a
deliberate misrepresentation to the tax
assessor. Two remedies suggest them
selves for this evil: One is the jier
sistent cultivation of a public sent iinoni
that will frown upon misrepreHeiiia-
tions ol this character that will con
demn the tax dodger to a discreditable
position. The other is the eltction to
the oitice of tax assessor ot a man who
will make no discrimination Ism ween
individual- hut who will use every
effort to have all property lined for
taxation, and to expose any man, bigh

employed. Bryan's Commoner.
