Kipley, I'.dwards and Mitchell, three men who have been playing with the Colfax baseball team, arrived in Pendleton on Friday evening, July .. on then way to Baker City, where they expect to play the rest of the ses ann. B, Itudde, the mauauer of the Haiton team, knew them to be goial bal I players and secured them for the game on the morning of Saturday against Athena. 'Their playing prac tically won the game for Dayton. That caused the Athena contingent to (eel sore at Pendleton generally ami Manager Under in particular, because tbay clilimed and believed that he had put up money to assist the Hayton club in sending or the new men. Mr, Kmlor did not put up money to get ihein here and did not know they were coming until be saw them on their way from the depot to their hotel alter their arrival Friday evening. The manager ol the Dayton team snapped them up as quickly as possible alter he found they were here. All three ol tl.e players expressed themselves pointedly on this mutter in the presence of numerous people ami said that they came to Pendleton without having been sent for by anyone. They came because they were through at Odfax, having played the closing game there on the Fourth, and weie on their way to Baker City looking for tii w positions. The Attn na boys have no kick against the Pendleton manager because Dayton won Saturday morning's t'utne. Heppner Defeated Pendleton. The game between Pendleton and Heppner on the afternoon of Julv I was a peculiar one. Chapter pi dud and Waters caught for the homo team t'bapler kept the bits down to eight, but Iba Pendleton boys piled up eight errors at inopportune times aud Uie re suit was nappnaf matta 10 runs. iJabaia started in and pitched two innings, lor Heptdier. In the fifth inning Heppner made six runs ofl four safe hits, three urmra und a tieltler's choice. Then Pendleton tried 0 score and couldn't, lu the eighth i lining, m idst the wildest ! enthusiasm. Heppner made four runs, ', putting that side one ahead, on two , bits, three errors and a Helder'i choice. Va ,'ly oo Ter BrlCHy free WHEAT CROP IS DAAA0ED Tha farmers of Omatllla Ceunt Brine Adverse Reports. The reports ot the wheat crop of Umatilla conntv for the year of 901, s brought to Pendleton on the latter daye of Fourth o( July week, and on , Sunday anil Mnndey of this week, are of a decidedly adverse character. Sev eral ol the boat informed fanners of the county bare told the Kaat Orego nian that the crop baa been damaged , certainly not leea than 2ft per cent. I This has been done by e combination of circumstances The froeta of June ft 7 started the trouble. They left the, wheat plant in a weakened condition. 1 hen came the cold winds, blasting the grain. The wheat raised in Uma tilla Bounty in itkxi was probably OW.ilMl hcshels, nearly all of which was No. 1. Included in that was a great deal of volunteer wheat, which i made phenomenal yield, ami spring! w heat, much above the average. I he volunteer wheat this vear will be scarcely any crop. Dr. W. R. Campbell's Report. The most pronounced report of crop damage was brought to 1'cudlclou this morning bv Dr W. It. Oampbel I , who reeidea In the Cold spring country, is miles northwest of I'endlotnn. He has been examining fields of wheat for the Scotch conpanf and iayi that the i rons north 01 liuulleton have been damaged 00 per cent. "Not onlv will the field be Ics. but the wheat har vested n j be ol low grade," sai'l Mr. Campbell "There won't be .'".!,("". bushels of Ho, I wheat rutse.l in I ma tilla cmtntv this vear. Ihere won't be A single field of No. 1 wheat in the Cold Spring country." Those are rather strong expressions, but the doctor raises a great deal ef wheat and claims to be a careful observer of matters pertaining to crops, anil is consequently entitled to coneiderut ion as a statistician. Western Slopes Damaged. I be greatest damage to wheat is on the western slopes. The cold winds' did the damage, rather than the, fmsts, is the general opinion.
