THE PRICE OF POTATOES
AN ADVANCS OP 100 PUR CINT WITH
IN THRRR MONTHS.
There Will Be No More Shipment! to
Denver at Portr Tenia
Per Saek.
Three ami four months ago the price
of potatoes in Pendleton was quoted at
to cents per aack, delivered at the
grocerv stores, and they did not eeem
to be in verv gnml demand even at that
ngure. as tne winter passed and po
tatoes became scarcer. Ihev advanced
10 cents per bushel. Several of the
heaviest holders of last year's crop re
fused to dispose of their potatoes al the
raise, and still have sereral thousand
sacks left. 0, W. Klghy shipped a
carload, BOO sacks, to Penrer, (lolo. .
t,. months ago. which netted him 40
cents ir sack. Tin shipment had no
sooner arrived at Penver than the mer
chant to whom consigned wrote beck
for three or four carloads mom at the
same figure. Mr. Blab) remarked this
morning that, he bad no more potatoes
either to ship or sell at homo at 10
cents per sack .
Jump te 76 Cents.
The scarcity of spuds in the local
market and the demand both hero and
at neighboring cities, had the effect of
jumping the price from 50 cents to 7.'i
cents per sack. That price is being
generally offend by grocers, who retail
them out lo customers at from Kf cents
to fl per sack.
Two months will elapse liefore the
potato crop of this section will hiy.n
to show itself, and then at fanes
prices. In the meantime old potatoes
occupy a conspicuous place in the
market reorts and threaten to ro to fl
per sack delivered at the lion or at
grocery stores.
