Davis, the ex-clerk of the school land board, in whoae ac counts a nhortage of $31,000 waa re ported hy the legislative .committee, has not heen seen in Salem aince the report was made. Thia has given rise to a persistent rumor that he has left the state. An inquiry ae to his where about was made at hia home, and a Brans bat of his family declined to give any information further than that Mr. Davis was not at home. His neighbor have not seen him since the irregulari ties were made public. While these circumstances have given rise to the story that Mr. Davis in a fugitive, it ii not uncommon for him to lie away from home for several weeks at a time, and be may be keeping out of eight because he feels keenly the onus that ret upon him. It is a matter of unfavorable com ment tlm! Mr. Davis ha made no at tempt to explain the (rniidulent en tries that appear in hia book, and it ia said that he has made no explana tion to hi bondsmen. Since the hort age was discovered, Davi' official !ond has been examined, and appears o have no defect which would prevent the state from recovering the amount provided in the undertaking, which 1 1 only $5000.
