Tim hx -janitor or thb cafitol amp HIS "BIO ROLL." Hs Is Just Ons or tbe Astors In the Benatorlal Play at Salem. At Salem tbe case of John Gates, late assistant ianitor at the capital and who was arretted on Thursday night at Albany, on a warrant issued in Salem, charged with larceny bv bailee ol 11600; is Still attracting at tention There is an interesting bit of gossip connected with this case, and if the rumors in circulation are true, It may vet Attract far greater attention than it does now. Gates rams from Woodbiirn, and secured a job as assistant janitor at the state house, it is Mid, upon recommendation ot Kepresentative J. M. Ponrman, also a resident of that city. Herbert L. Gill, editor of the Woodbttrn Independent, has also hail employment at the capltol, as a clerk on the house ways and means com mitt. It seems that on last Tuesday Mr Gill placed flfiOU, fifteen $100 bills, in tbe hands ol dates, with instruc tions to pav the money to certain per sons named to him. This money and janitor listen immediately disap peared, and efforts to Unit man and money were successful when Gates was apprehended at Albany Wednes day It is not unite clear for what pur pose the money was transferred, but rumor has it that the funds were not those of F.ditor Gill, but were given Gill by Mr. Poorman, to be paid to some members of the legislature, for what purpose can only be surmised Mr. Poorman disclaims anv interest in the matter, and Mr. Gill has not been seen in Salem since the arrest of Gates was made. When Gatee was appre bended, he had II. '.no in currency, and express receipts for 1900, evidencing a remittance to that amount to his sister Chief of Police Gibson, of this city, has the money in his possession and is anxious to find the rightful owner who will have to be found, as Mr Gill, who swore in tbe complaint, charging Gates with the theft, that be was tbe owner of the monev, is net here to elaim it. An interesting tact in connection with tl.e case is, that two attorneys were employed for the man, and that the one be retained lurnished eash bail for the prisoner to tbe tune of f 'io taking this amount from a roll of currency the sight of which made ttie i il i.-e court reporters gasp. It is evident that no efforts will lie spared to tree the man and hush up the story but it is promiaed, bv those on the inside, that senaatiooal developments will result within the next few days. o ill's place, as clerk on tbe house ways and means committee has been declared vacant, by a resolution adopted by the committee, for the ex press reason that he has been absent from his duties since the evening of February 20.
