A Flcht Descrllist Between a Whale on
On side, a Bwordflish and
Thrasher on the Other,
The following are excerpts from u
letter written at Skagwav, Alaska, to
Walter M. Pierce, nf tfiia city, under
date nf January 22:
"Cpon reaching Seattle, I sailed on
the freight steamship Ruth, bound for
Skagwav. It took seven ami one-half
day" It) make the trip, but the time
passed only too quickly. Yon cannot
imagine the grandeur, beauty or im
mensity of Aiaaka nntil you have gone
over tit is ronte. Here you steam
across wide stretchea of ocean in
dented into the coast, then suddenly
plunge into narrow channels wltft
precipitous and snow-capped peaks on
either hand, down the sides of w hich
tumble tiny rivulet- or huge
waterfalls. Along this path of
panoramic bounty of . sudden hursts
into view Indian burying grounds with
their fauUstic totem poles, some
hideous, but all real works of savage
art, fully attesting to the peculiar DO
I iofa of these people, an I their more
than peculiar method of burial of the
dead.
'"There is lots of titnlier on (be moun

the fact that there is no depth of soil

"Just as we were finishing the paf--auge

winch was very rough. 1 suw a sight
vouchsafed to very few no more or
less than it battle royal between a tm iri
whale on one side and a sword-Hsb and
thrasher on the oilier. The method of
attack bv the latter was fur the sword
fish to keep prodding the whale in the
belly, causing the whale o rise to the
surface, when the thrasher would bring
down his tail across the back Of the
whale with a vim and a will that
would have brought the blush of shame
to your good-natured countenance at
the reci, 1 1 t ion of the pun y whipping
you were capable of administering in
your days of pedagogy. It a as u sight,
though, I novel shall forget. Since
that time I have with my family hid
the pleasure of walking on lop of the
