MUKSTIONS or THE ELECTION.
On thin page appear the figures lax!
published hy the Associated I'ress re-!
lating to the commercial failures in
the United States for thf nine months
of 1900, which have elapsed, compared
with tin- same period of IS99. Were a
partiaan writer to desire, he could 1
utilize theee ligures to convince people
that the tide of prosperity is ehhing.
He con lil make these figures indicate a
coming tinancial crash. He could, in
short, effeclually oftse! all argument
hy the republican press ami campaign :
orators, an. I demonstrate from Hum an
a 'parent decadence in American do
mestic commercial affairs.
The honest seeker after truth, how
ever, will concede that theae figure
are deceptive. They do absolutely
show an increase in failures arid an en
ormous augmentation of the total of
liabilities of the concerns which went
under.
Hut, the real truth is thai the in
irtaae is due to the format ion of a large
number of trust companies which
thran on ttie stock market what the
Wall street operator designate "In
dustrial ; " thai the failures during
lts have liet-n largely by these com.
IMiiiea which have never been legiti
mate elements in the commercial life
of the country. Hence, the failures
are by concerns that should be
separate.! from others in making a
statement like the uic here under dis
cussion. It is probably true that a tinancial
depression is coming, regardless of
whether Mr. McKiuleyor Mr. Hryan
is elected. It will come through the
agency of a reaction from a perhxt of
speculation and inflation through
which the oiintry has been passing.
Hut, that the reaction has yet affected
legitimate concern to great ext...,'
cannot be claimed in honestv.
This reaction will occur in-fore very
long. It is as certain to come as are
tin days of tiie future. Whichever
political nar: is in power at that time
will bear the blame. Hem. it is, that
many loyal democrats are halting in
their attitude in tin- present campaign.
Hence it is that many perr.11- who
believe in the principles advocated by
W. J. Hryan will vote for William
McK inlay And, if the Nebraskan be
defeated, it will be by reason of this
view obtaining among enough demo
crats to cut off the necessary majority
for election.
fciiflicicnl people are followers of
Mr. Bryan this year to insure hit elec
lion, it they vote the democratic ticket
who really lielieve in its principles.
The gold democrats are in line, a ma-

they are numerous in the doubtful
states. Die tree silver republicans
have in large number returned to tt

affiliation. Hut, not enough free -ih
republicans have left the democratic
standard to balance the accretions I rout

OBN. GRANT'S LOVE FOR CHILDREN
'The late tieneral tirant." said t
V. Daviess of Washington in an inter
view in tin- .ew ork tritium-, was
alwavs kindness itself to children. II
had a large family of his own, ami this
it was, probably, that bred in him tl
kindl- spirit ol tolerance that be ever
showed to the younger generation. A
friend of mine told me thai the lirst
time he ever saw the general w.i- - hen
he was a small shaver. In those days
dinners were given at a very earlv
hour, ami sweetmeats and candies of
all kinds were much used.
s
"This particular evening lirant hail

house ami mv friend had descended the
backstairs, clad onl in his niubt

The small Ihiv m-eked through the
door, and there a few feet awav. on a
side table, were the sweetmeats of his
heart's desire, tiueils and servants
seemed alike engrossed, and so,
don hits I up. he tiptoed across the Hoor.
"Just as his tiny, chubby list closed
011 the lirsl dish he felt himself taken
by the ear, while the aggrieved voice
of the butler said: 'Here now, you

your inah going' to say to Lewis If he

things.' And with that he gave the
offender's ear a twist that caused him
to utter a shriek of pain. A stout,
stpaarely built man, seated nearest the
pair, turned at the sound and called
the small boy to him. 'What's the
matter, little man '' he u.'ked ju a
kindlv voice, and the lad, between

"To insure thorough appreciation of
this tale of we, I must explain n little
about the Interior arrangement, of
Smith's house. The host's room was
a large and sunny one, with a halh
risiiii attached. Near by was lodpBri
'Mat,' ard in the bathroom he got his
morning tub, and couseipiently re
garded il as apart of his personal prop
erty. As the best in the Hons, Smith
naturally turned over his own room
to the general . The boy was left un
disturbed in his own room, and no ope
advised hint of the change tiiat had oc
curred 111 his father 's apartment. Here
in lay the fatal error. Arnic.l with his
dollar 'Mat' trudtnd down the dusty
road and sent his playmates into
-n.i-ni' of env hy llii-hiiig the coin be
fore them, lie bought a balloon, a
ring and ball, and some other trinkets,
i Kit 70 Cents still remained. Then came
a Hippy thought, ami in- invested his
entire balance in molasses candy and
-taric.l for hoBM. The taffy inane a
ling" bundle, almost as nie as the hov.
1 1 was very hot, ami the package got
very heavy. Then he dropped it, the
bundle broke, and the sticky mass be
came covered with rjtttt. In this wise
he arrived home. ' '
" 'Mat' snt on the lawn and rested.
No one was about, everybody Is-ing ut
the railroad station to meet tieneral
Grant," Mm narrator went mi. "Than
the hoy tried to eal some of the tatTv,
but the din prevented. 'I'll wash It,'
qnoth he, and started for the house.
Straight to his father's bathnsiin ho
went, and dumping the mass in the
wash bow l he turned on the faucet
The heal had mclti-d the candy, and it
stuck to the sides of the bowl. 'Mat'
got it in his hair and on his shirt
front in his attempts to dislodge ft,
and linally, wearying ol the effort,
left it where it was ami went oft alsiiil
other things.
"In the meantime the general ar
rived, and what with meeting the
prominent citirens who had called to
see him. etc., tin- supper hour came
Us)li them unawares. The general
said lie wished to wash his hands, and
Smith esc. rted him to his chamber
ami showed him the bathroom. 'Never
mind about a light,' said the general,
as he kO Rwd 011 the water and thrust
his hands in the bowl. 'Ureal Scott!
what on earth is this'.'' he gasped,
smith, with a sinking heart rushed in
and lit the gas, and then both men
gated at the awful mess in the howl.
'It's im-lasses,' said the general, as ho
examined his hands. 'D that hoy"
groaned Smith under his breath. 'I
wonder what he s been up to now.'
Then he went into an adioiniuu Ir 10m
ami shortly returned with a sleepy Isiv
under his arm. The hov'.- hair was
sticky and his face was streaked with
vellow. Frightened, he gave a lame
explanation of what had liapa-ued. It
was too tunnv. ami tbe tension gave

volubly explaining to them how it all
came to pass. Despite the general's en-
treates, the young hopeful was whisked
from the scene, ami during the halanci

nv ins absence. As jirs. smith put it,
