K Thirty-tilth United State, volun teers, write-, to his relatives in this city from Narxamrav. Island of Huron. Philippine Islands, under date of Jane 3. Tbe letter hears William's enrmarks urn! footprints and from it the following is enilpd : ' Yours of April LM found ma verv weary, just in from I hard march In an unsuccessful utlempt to rescue Cap tain Kotierts. 1 eompaiiv. Thirtv-tiffh regiment, and three 01 his men from the Filipinos, who ran against 1 I. OTP pany ami prooeaged to do it an very MVJWn. killing three men, wounding several more and taking the captain prisoner. We turned out. chased the festive Filipinos for Stt hours ami simply couldn't catch them, let alone rescue the captain. Maybe he will not have a hard time! for the natives do not understand "prisoners of war," and to them, especially around here, where we have hunted them un unceas ingly, a white man is simply a thing to torture to death at their "pleasure. 1 have no sympathy fnr a man who will allow the Filipinos to take him prisoner. I would u whole bit rather shut and instantly killed than to fall into the bands' of the Filipinos, and if it should ever come to such a chance I certainly would blow in the side of my head rather than Is' taken alien, Footracea Rather Than Fighta. "Bo you rend ha the papere al the light' the Thirty-lillh is having? Well, I annpoaa they might be called 'lights' but they certainly are not batiies, or anything remotely reeembl Ing them. A vnlley or two and then its double time march and away go the nimble gnogoos over the other hill, ami going nearly us fast as the bullets which follow them. 01 cuirw, we KMnetlnaea corral a small hunch and bring them intocump, hut as it general thing they get away, barring thi,c that get a doaa nl lead and find it in digestible. They usual Iv die, but they do not go tn heaven hy a jugful. So. when you read of these fearful frays, please roUMMlbOf that they are liurdly worthy to DO called skirmishes, ami resemble fisitraces more than any thing else. "(If course there is a man I refer to an American killed occasionally, hut even a dead soldier does not make u buttle Anyhow, I am not going to get hot. The bullet is not yet munulHc tured thut will trouble my anatomy, and no fool Filipino can shoot straight enough to bit, except by accident. Barracka Blown Down. "Recently we have bad a most excit ing experience, but not from any giiogisi bill lets. Our new barracks had just been finished and we moved in Thursday. On Sunday evening along comes a cross la,tween a cvelone, a typobOO and a waterspout. The wind blew our barracks as flat as a pancake and the ruin descended and the tlisnls came uud- slud -I use the word advisedly popped in general. At one lei I swoop we were rendered homeless, supperless and wet, and to cap all we had no dry clothes, for alien the barrack- fell our clothing fell also ami into nothing else than IK inches of extremely wet water. From supper, which we did not get, until hluck dark ness we worked around the ruins rustl ing properly, and succeeded in getting II ol our dripping belongings safely out. Then we pitched our tents in the middle ot a large slimy lake of mud uud promptly dropped asleep, ulso in the mud uud in very wet clothing. The barracks were an absolute wreck and thev are now building new one- which a il l probably blow down tbe next time a storm comes. Of course, bar racks are much more comfortable than tentsthat is, ordinarily -but if the barracks are going to blow down every now and then 1 prefer to remain in a tent. A properly put up tent, us- peelally Sibley, tnnmri blow down unless a han-a- cyclone strikes it, then a brick block would not stund the pressure. "A mouth from now will huve found me in the army nearly a year, lacking a week, and I will huve just a year more tn serve, and certainly time Hies here most remarkably. Hy the time 1 do a tOHT ol guard duty it is .Sunday again. "The veriest rumors which have been Banting around concerning the future movements of our regiment, such as going to Honolulu, Manila, uud Ho llo huve all proved themselves simply rumors and everyone is now satisfied thut we are to remain here until our time is up, and certainly 1 am hoping so, for this is one of the healthiest tow ns on the whole island, and boa idea that, it any trouble sturts up it will come right here, ami we are consipiuently certain to get our share .ii n i although as far us that gists we have had more thun our shure of a bat fun there has been already.
