Here I'rnfessor Iluffum presents a
table showing the amounts of water
lined on fourteen different crops of
alfalfa. "The table shows" he con
tinues, "that we'have not used very
large amounts of water in the produc
tion of alfalfa. Our measurements of
water used on native hay shows that
only about one-half the water was used
on alfalfa as on the native hay." An
aveiage of these fourteen measurements
made at Laramie as set Inrth in the
above mentioned table shows the
depth of water applied to alfalfa to
have been L'.'J'J feet. An average of six
measurements made by the station on
oats, wheat and hurley, shows 2.74
acre feet applied t 1 each acre of those
crops. The only class of plant upon
which less water has been used by the
station than on alfalfa has Is-en root
crops

tion was given it until the severe
weather winter before last put its hard
iness to the lest. On all parts of the
farm-plots at the Wyoming station the
ordinary alfalfa showed mure or less
winter killing, hut not a single plant
of the Turkestan variety had been
hurt. (Similar resirts were received
by the department ol agriculture from
nther sections. Not only does it seem
hardier, but it has generally produced
heavier yield- than the common
Ifajfo. On the Wyoming experiment
station farm, averaging the results for
the last two seasons, when cut for hav
and en nil alike, the Turkestan variety
clearly showed MpwiOf cropning qual
ities, producing over threc-foiirlhs of a
ton more ha. per acre.
Secretary Wilson, of the department
of agriculture is greatly pleased at
tin- discovery of this variety of alfalfa
anil its apparent hardiness and heavy
yielding qualities ami his department
is preparing to introduce it generally
