ami wlio exports inuneliHe quantities of
flour to China and Japan. Mr. Kver
says mat lie cann.it not ice anv I
ing in the demand for American
in the Orient.
Mr. Myers, in talking of the war and
the Hour trade, prejejrtl a view that
is not at all pessimistic. He says:
"This war is reasonahlv cerf'ain in
the end to operate to the hcm rlt of the
const farmer. At this time, wr are en
joying a very good demand in most of
tlie seali'iard OltlM of the Orient for
our flour. The hulk of thr trade, of
course, is through Hong Kong, and
since England owns Hint port to all
intents and purposes, there is little
danger that We will he cut off from our
share in whatever trade is carried on.
Certainty or the hxtenslon or Trade.
"lint, notwithstanding the waging of
war or the unlet coming of peace, it is
quite certain that we will he able to
extend our trade in the Orient. If
war occurs, then the people ol those
countries w ill have their attent i li
veried from the usual pursuits of agri
culture, ami the flour will continue to

"Let it he imderst ood that the flour
DOW OOOaUBed in the Oriental coun

case, it is necessary only that the sea

tion of the flour trade w ith hut little

"Then, in the event of the Chinese
llmpirc hoing .limrmhcriil and the
various powers ti.kuiL' each a portion.
it is inevitable that our opportunities
will he va-tly njete in that quarter of
the globe, both in the flour trade, and
ills., in all lines of commercial en
deavor. We on Hie coast are situated
so as to OOfnmend the flour trade l
heiim given an even chance with other
countries, for we are nearest and dis
tance is one of the determining cle
ment- in the prolilem there, as it is
anywhere else when transportation en
ters int.. the question.
"It is, after all, mostly a question
of procuring steamship lines of en
tuned capacity in order to expand the
trade of this country in the Orient. If
the transportation interests put on
additional lines, and millers ami ex
porters are ahle to secure hottoms w hen
needed lor tile carrving of flour to
those countries, our trade will expand
of itself, war or no war."
Mr. Hyers adds to the alsive state
ment that whenever wheut goes ulmve
tiftv cents a hiishel here on the count
' it knocks out the Oriental flour trade.
At fifty cents, the trade flourishes,
j Above that ligtire, it languishes.
