John Shaw is introducing a new
variety ol iiotato, called Ihe ''Mortgage
Lifter." Two years ago he sent 1!5
cents rust nnd received just one potato,
lie planted it, planted the crop from
it next time, and last fall graft plenty
of potittis'S on two lots to supply the
family, us well as furnish s I to sev
eral neighhors. The "Moftgaga
Lifter" is h smooth-skinned, genteel
looking potato, with no knoli-like
protiiliernuces that mark the plablWI
spud. It is very prolitlc, ami there
would never ln anv danger of a potato
famine in Ireland if this variety was
given 11 show. Mr. Shaw thinks that
if given a u'eneral trial in this locality
it will lead all other varieties in popu
larity. .1. (.. Hood, justice of the eilcc,
Crosby, Miss., makes the following
statement: "I can certify that One
Minute Cough Cure will do all that is
claimed or it. My wile could not net

The university of Washington and
Whitman college bad a tield dav on
Wednesday, which was well attended,
Hate receipts were 1200. Tbe I'll ion
thus speaks of the affair :
''The state university vi.-itors carried
oft the lion's share of the honors in
the tield day contests at the race track
yesterday afternoon. The Whitman
athletes showed lack of practice in
every event, snve the bicycle races
when the prowess of Walters. Moorl
and Toner gave cause for irrent rejoic
iny ami partly recompensed for the
other fallen heroes.
"Over 5(K) people witnessed the sport
and the slarim; hot sun did not melt
their enthusiasm, (for tlie majority
preferred closer proximity to the scene
of active oaaMUROM than the shade of
the uraiid stand afforded.
"Considering Ihe condition of the
track some tine records were made and
four were broken, including the north
west record for 4411 yard sprinters.
George I'arris of tbe Scuttle Athletic
club last year male a record of ft:t 2-S
seconds for this disance und Hiintoon
yesterday lowered tiiis to fi2 2-5. The
previous university record was .VI 4-5.
in the HMO-yurd run Morford lowered
the university record held hv himself,

the 220-yard dash was reduced from
28 1-5 the lime made by Veser lust
year to 22 4-6. in the hurdle nice,
Caulkins lowered John Palmer's uni

All interesting event, one which w ill
he on the program here on May 10 was
the mile relay, which the I'nion thus
ilescrils's :
"The last race was entered by
Worthiiigton, tl. Lasater, Walter and
Palmer lor Whitman, and Thayer,
Morford, Chestnut and Caulkins for
the university. The tirst iiuarter was
run by Caulkins and Walters; the
latter lust ten yards for Palmer, bis
successor, wbo gained some on Ibaver
