villains who did the job been carried into
effect, and the dark means of destruction

to the sleeper would have been thrown

neath, demolished into smithereens, and
hardly a single human soul on board
would have been left alive to tell the tale.
But by tho interposition of a kind l'rov
Idence the ovil designs of the demoniacal
train wreckers wore thwarted. Hither
tho charge was not sulllcient or had not
been properly placed. Tho force of tho
explosion merely stunned and frightened

attempted wreck, named Joseph Mer

Hut Merrick probably began to "smell a
rat," and concluded that the country was
not a cry healthy one for him, So he
made preparations to leave it.
He came to l'endleton the day after
election. In order to Uave he had to
have funds, and these he was determined
to raise by hook or crook. He went
about it in the most approved plan, forg
ing a prominent man's name to checks
on a bank at this place, and coolly nego
tiating tho worthless paper with rivate
individuals who inspected nothing.

to make tracks for the extreme else
where, but was overtaken by an aveng

Merrick was not tho only one Impli
cated, however. Ho was supposed to
have hod an accomplice in the crime
named Kd Hhick, and this man Furnish
waH determined to capturo. So back ho
started to Kamcla and there secured and
handcuffed his man, bringing him also to
I'nndleton.
Jioth were now traped. .Merrick was
kept in jail, and, to prevent the two
worthies from comparing notes, Hlack
was guarded on tho outside by olliccrs.
