otthidclty. The explosion occurred in a
now drift,' iu which twenty pereoim wuro
at work. Aa soon us possible after the
explosion, the mine was entered, und fif
teen dead bodies wera taken out. Four other
men were badly Injured, and have been
since found, one of whom has died.
Others are likely to die. The force of thu
explosion Is shown in thu fact that bodies
were blown clear out of the mouth of the
drift.

of thu Umatilla County Coal Company,
four or live miles further back Into the

of good-looking coal croiied from the
mountain side, und other evidence of
tho presoncu of tho black diamond
worn not wanting. The mlno wan

It Is tielluved to be the Intention of the
compuny to sink u shutt Into thrH vein,
by which means Its oxtensivenesHcan bo
fully discovered. Tho tunnel hwro is not
the only una in thu ucighlorhood, there
being two or three more scuttered among
tho gulches, showing that tho country
had iM-i-it examined considerably by coal
hunters, lu ouch euso it wuh learned
that the workers uroartlicd a very small,
vein ut tho start, and that it widened
gradually on being followed Into the
mountain aide, although tho tunnels were
luvuriubly discontinued befnro coal was
found iu paying quantities, That of the
company, tho longest one driven, was
sturtod with a three-inch vein, which
widened bv decrees Into eighteen Inches
